Soils Lab Technician

Position Overview:

As a Soils Lab Technician, you will collect, label, and prepare soil samples for testing, perform various soil tests, record and analyze data, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. You will also maintain lab equipment, document procedures, collaborate with team members, and provide technical support and training.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Collect and label soil samples from various locations and depths.
  • Prepare samples for testing (drying, sieving, etc.).
  • Perform soil tests: grain size analysis, Atterberg limits, compaction tests, soil moisture content, specific gravity, permeability, and unconfined compressive strength.
  • Follow standard testing procedures (e.g., ASTM, AASHTO).
  • Record and log test results accurately.
  • Use software tools to analyze data and generate reports.
  • Interpret test results and provide insights.
  • Operate and maintain lab equipment.
  • Calibrate equipment regularly.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on equipment.
  • Adhere to quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices.
  • Prepare detailed test reports.
  • Document procedures, observations, and results.
  • Maintain organized records and files.

Minimum Qualifications/Required Skills and Abilities:

  • 5–10 years of experience in a laboratory setting, particularly with soil testing.
  • Certification from relevant professional organizations (e.g., NICET, ACI) in soil testing or laboratory practices.
  • Basic understanding of soil properties and testing methods.
  • Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good record-keeping and data entry skills.
  • Ability to follow standard procedures and protocols.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with data analysis software.
