NSC Staffing is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer (Weights Engineer) to support ship design, construction, and production programs. This temporary engineering position plays a critical role in weight estimation, weight management, stability support, and configuration analysis throughout all phases of ship construction and lifecycle management.
The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background, shipyard or marine industry experience, and the ability to work collaboratively with Engineering, Production, and Program teams to support complex vessel projects.
Position Overview
The Senior Engineer (Weights Engineer) is responsible for developing, analyzing, validating, and maintaining ship weight and configuration data throughout the design, construction, and testing phases of vessel programs. This position supports shipyard evolutions including launches, incline experiments, deadweight surveys, and other weight-sensitive operations.
This role requires strong analytical ability, experience working with large datasets, and a solid understanding of ship systems, construction processes, and engineering principles.
Key Responsibilities
Weight Engineering & Analysis
  • Develop and maintain ship weight estimates throughout all phases of design and construction.
  • Perform weight calculations, analysis, and validation of shipboard systems and equipment.
  • Support vessel configuration management and weight tracking activities.
  • Analyze design changes and determine impacts to weight, stability, and overall vessel performance.
  • Maintain and update weight databases and associated documentation.
Shipyard & Vessel Support
  • Support major shipyard events including:
    • Ship launches
    • Incline experiments
    • Deadweight surveys
    • Stability evaluations
  • Coordinate with Engineering and Production teams to gather information required for weight calculations and reporting.
  • Verify field conditions and support weight data collection activities aboard vessels.
Engineering & Technical Leadership
  • Facilitate resolution of technical challenges using accepted engineering practices and industry standards.
  • Identify and communicate technical risks and potential issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and engineering teams.
  • Participate in engineering reviews and technical working groups.
Project Support & Documentation
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, engineering documentation, and correspondence.
  • Document technical discussions, decisions, and action items resulting from internal and external meetings.
  • Support customer and regulatory interactions related to weight engineering requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with contract requirements, ship specifications, and engineering standards.
Process Improvement & Team Development
  • Support implementation of department processes and engineering best practices.
  • Assist with continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor and train engineers within the discipline.
  • Promote collaboration and knowledge sharing across departments.

Qualifications & Experience
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences, or a related field required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
  • Advanced engineering degree is a plus.
Experience & Knowledge
  • Minimum 4 years of practical engineering experience beyond education requirements.
  • Shipyard, shipbuilding, ship repair, testing, or production experience preferred.
  • Experience with:
    • Weight estimation
    • Configuration management
    • Ship stability support
    • Engineering analysis
  • Knowledge of shipboard systems and vessel construction methods.
  • Experience working with large databases and engineering data systems preferred.
Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and database applications.

Work Environment
  • Combination of office and industrial shipyard environments.
  • Frequent interaction with Engineering, Production, and Program teams.
  • Exposure to active construction, shipbuilding, and industrial operations.
  • Position may require vessel access and field verification activities.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in both office and industrial environments.
  • Ability to walk throughout shipyards, warehouses, and production facilities.
  • Ability to board vessels and navigate:
    • Ladders
    • Scaffolding
    • Elevated work platforms
    • Confined spaces
  • Ability to traverse uneven surfaces and construction areas safely.
  • Exposure to noise, weather, dust, industrial equipment, and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift, transport, and utilize equipment required for assigned duties.
