Job description

Job Description:

This position is responsible for the safe erection, modification, and dismantling of scaffolding structures used to support ship repair, maintenance, and industrial construction projects within a shipyard environment. Shipyard Scaffold Builders ensure all work platforms are constructed securely and in compliance with safety regulations to support various trades working at heights and in confined areas.

Responsibilities include:

  • Erect, modify, and dismantle scaffolding systems aboard ships, dry docks, and shipyard facilities.
  • Read and interpret scaffold drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.
  • Inspect scaffold materials for safety, damage, and compliance before use.
  • Build scaffolds to support shipfitters, welders, painters, pipefitters, and other trades.
  • Ensure all scaffolding is level, plumb, secure, and properly braced according to safety standards.
  • Install guardrails, toe boards, platforms, ladders, and access points.
  • Safely work at heights and on elevated structures in shipyard environments.
  • Follow all OSHA, shipyard, and company safety regulations at all times.
  • Perform daily inspections of erected scaffolding and make necessary adjustments or repairs.
  • Safely load, unload, and stage scaffold materials and equipment.
  • Work in confined spaces, aboard vessels, and in active production areas as required.
  • Communicate with supervisors and other trades to ensure scaffold access needs are met.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on project requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2–5 years of scaffold building experience preferred in shipyard or industrial environments.
  • Strong understanding of scaffold safety standards and erection procedures.
  • Ability to read and follow scaffold drawings and work instructions.
  • Experience working at heights on ships, structures, or industrial sites.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and OSHA compliance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent attendance, reliability, and strong work ethic.
  • Shipyard or marine experience strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to all area shipyards and naval bases (DBIDS clearance required).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb, work at heights, and maintain balance on elevated structures.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and work in physically demanding positions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work aboard vessels, scaffolding systems, dry docks, and uneven surfaces.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE including but not limited to hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, and fall protection equipment.
  • Ability to work in outdoor and industrial shipyard environments in varying weather conditions.

Work Schedule & Hours:

  • Full-time position averaging 48–56 hours per week, including weekends as required.
  • Overtime and extended hours may be required based on project needs.
