What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary service worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Service Worker, you need adaptability, a strong work ethic, and relevant experience or education depending on the assignment. Familiarity with office software, basic workplace safety protocols, or industry-specific tools is often required. Reliability, strong communication, and the ability to quickly learn new tasks are standout soft skills in this role. These qualities are important because temporary workers must quickly integrate into new environments and contribute effectively from day one.

What are some common challenges faced by employees in temporary service roles, and how can they be managed effectively?

Employees in temporary service positions often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new workplace environments, learning diverse systems and processes, and building rapport with permanent staff. To manage these challenges, it’s important to be proactive in communicating with supervisors, asking questions when needed, and maintaining a flexible attitude. Embracing new assignments as learning opportunities and demonstrating reliability can also help temporary workers stand out and potentially secure longer-term opportunities within organizations.

What are temporary service jobs?

Temporary service jobs cover a variety of short-term positions that help companies meet special staffing needs. For example, some companies make most of their sales in one season and need additional customer support representatives at that time, but not during the rest of the year. Rather than hiring full employees, businesses often turn to a staffing agency that can provide as many workers as needed. Temp recruit jobs usually require a small amount of training above and beyond the basic skill set workers are tested for, and the employer provides this training. Temporary service jobs should not be confused with seasonal positions that companies do hire employees for—while they are similar, the lack of a staffing agency in the middle changes the dynamics and function of seasonal jobs.

What are temporary service jobs?

Temporary service jobs are short-term positions where workers are hired for a limited period, often through staffing agencies. These jobs can range from a few days to several months and are common in industries that experience seasonal demand, special projects, or need to cover employee absences. Temporary workers may be assigned tasks similar to regular employees, providing flexibility for both employers and job seekers. Many people use temporary service jobs to gain experience, earn income between permanent roles, or explore different industries.

Job description

Nurse Practitioner, Hourly, Temporary
Job no: 548317
Work type: Staff
Location: Sonoma
Categories: Unit 2 - CSUEU - Health Care Support, Health Professionals, Temporary, Part Time
Exciting Opportunity at SSU!
Are you a compassionate and motivated Nurse Practitioner looking for a better work/life balance and the chance to make a real impact? Do you love connecting with patients, focusing on prevention, and sharing your knowledge through health education? Imagine working with a vibrant and diverse student community on a beautiful, energetic college campus-where you'll have the time to truly care, build relationships, and collaborate with an amazing team of campus partners!
If the idea of working only as your schedule allows and having ample time for family, friends, hobbies, and personal interests appeals to you, this position is for you. No on-call responsibilities or long hours are required! This might be an ideal position for someone who wants to move away from full-time work but would still like to provide medical care on their own terms without the challenges of private practice or working in large, intensive systems.
Sonoma State University (SSU) is seeking a skilled nurse practitioner to join our team at the Student Health Center (SHC) as we continue to develop and reinforce our culture of excellence. If you are looking for a fulfilling career with outstanding benefits, we encourage you to apply.
About Us
Sonoma State University values diversity, respect, excellence, and integrity. The SHC strives to provide high quality, affirming, and culturally-sensitive/humble care and health education to a diverse student population. The team includes administrators, medical assistants, registered nurses, a health educator, a laboratory scientist, a pharmacist, and medical providers. We are primarily funded by student fees, do not accept insurance, and are able to offer our students low or no-cost services. We largely treat acute illness and minor injury, perform age- and lifestyle-appropriate screening, and have the time and capacity to provide both individualized and population-based focus on health education and preventive care. We also provide reproductive health care including medication abortion. Join us and be a part of something extraordinary!
The Role
As a Nurse Practitioner, you'll be a vital member of the Student Health Center (SHC) team, reporting to the Associate Director of the Student Health Center and the Lead Physician. You'll join a close-knit, skilled, and collaborative medical team that values excellence, dependability, empathy, inclusion, teamwork, and overall well-being. Most of your time will be spent delivering direct care to students, with opportunities to contribute to department planning, quality improvement initiatives, committee participation, and outreach efforts. Your role will be essential in maintaining high-quality health services and making a lasting impact on the health and success of SSU students.
Qualifications
To thrive in this role, you must be a licensed Nurse Practitioner in the State of California with national board certification. Strong interpersonal and communication skills-both written and verbal-are essential. You should be comfortable using computers and electronic health records. Experience working in higher education and an interest in serving students from historically marginalized communities is highly preferred. This position requires the successful completion of a live scan fingerprinting.
Review the position description for full scope of responsibilities and qualifications.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
This position is open until filled and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis based on operational needs. For full consideration, please submit application, along with cover letter and resume.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $60.30 (Step 3) to $74.98 (Step 14) an hour. This is a part time, temporary, non-exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations.
