Job description

Job Title: Country Store Retail Associate - TEMPORARY
Division: Agriculture Business Development
Headquarters: State Fair Grounds, Lewisburg, WV
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Nature of Work:
Temporary retail sales positions available for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture's "Country Store" during the State Fair of WV, August 13 - August 22, 2026 in Lewisburg, WV. The position may also assist prior to the opening of the Fair for inventory and setup of the Country Store and after the Fair for post-inventory and teardown. The "Country Store" operates for the duration of the State Fair and sells only food products from WV agribusinesses, including maple syrup, honey, jams, salsas, recipe mixes and more. Interested parties should enjoy working with the public, have excellent interpersonal and communications skills and be able to provide exceptional service for customers.
Examples of Work:
  • Assists with maintaining the inventory stockroom and setting up merchandise displays on the sales floor.
  • Welcomes customers by greeting them; offering them assistance.
  • Directs customers by escorting them to racks and counters; suggesting items.
  • Advises customers by providing information on products.
  • Processes payments by totaling purchases; processing cash and credit cards.
  • Develops solutions for customers by listening to their needs and recommending the appropriate products.
  • Collaborates with other team members to keep the sales floor area clean and organized at all times.
  • Must be able to attend a brief training period prior to the start of the Fair.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours between 9am-7pm daily, including weekends.
  • Must be dependable.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • General knowledge of retail sales.
  • Ability to process retail sales.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations.
  • Ability to work well on a team.
  • Excellent skills in communicating with the public.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Qualifications:
High school diploma/GED required.
Customer service experience preferred.
Additional Requirements:
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
  • Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
