What does a temporary project accountant do?

As a temporary project accountant, your job is to manage financial information for one or more projects. In this role, you may monitor expenses, ensure accurate billing, collect payment information from a customer, audit each transaction, and evaluate the expected cost of the project to compare it to the budget or revenue. Temporary project accountants usually work on short-duration projectsβ€”which can mean anywhere from several days to several monthsβ€”or for a set period on a larger project that needs extra support. As such, this accounting job can be done individually or as part of a team, so the flexibility to adjust to the needs of each project is essential to success.

What does a temporary project accountant do?

A Temporary Project Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the financial aspects of specific projects within an organization for a limited period. Their duties typically include budgeting, tracking project expenses, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and company policies. They often collaborate with project managers and other departments to ensure accurate financial records and support successful project completion. The temporary nature of the role means they are usually hired for the duration of a particular project or to cover short-term accounting needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary project accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Project Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and project-based cost tracking, often backed by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Excel, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and effective communication help ensure accuracy and clear coordination with project teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining precise project financials, meeting deadlines, and supporting organizational decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by temporary project accountants, and how can they be managed?

Temporary Project Accountants often encounter the challenge of quickly adapting to new teams and unfamiliar accounting systems, as projects may have unique processes or software. To manage this, it's helpful to proactively communicate with team members and seek out documentation or training resources early on. Time management is also crucial, as deadlines can be tight and priorities may shift frequently in a project environment. Building rapport with colleagues and asking clarifying questions can help you integrate smoothly and deliver accurate financial reports on schedule.

SAP Reconciliation Project

Richmond, VA β€’ Hybrid

Job description

Job Description ProspectBlue is partnering with a well-established organization undergoing a major SAP implementation and system transition. We are seeking multiple Fractional Controllers / Accounting Directors to support a critical SAP Reconciliation Project and help ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data throughout the transition. SAP recently went live, and the organization is transitioning approximately two branches every two weeks from its legacy system into SAP.

This team will play a critical role in ensuring financial data transfers accurately and that accounts fully reconcile throughout the transition. This is a great opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys hands-on reconciliation work, digging into the details, and making sure the numbers tie out. Key Responsibilities: Reconcile financial data transferred from the legacy ERP system into SAP.

Review and validate large data files to ensure transactions are accurately reflected in SAP. Perform detailed reconciliations across General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Inventory. Identify, research, and resolve discrepancies between systems.

Ensure balances and transactions properly tie out throughout the branch conversion process. Assist with ongoing accounting and reconciliation needs related to the SAP transition. Collaborate with Finance and Credit/AR teams to resolve issues and keep the conversion process moving.

Support occasional weekend work as needed during the transition. What We're Looking For: Hands-on accounting experience with a strong understanding of General Ledger fundamentals. Solid reconciliation experience and strong attention to detail.

Comfortable working with large amounts of financial data. Ability to identify discrepancies, research issues, and determine appropriate resolutions. Self-directed and able to work effectively with limited training and oversight.

ERP experience required; SAP and/or experience with system conversions is a plus. AR/Credit experience is a plus for resources supporting that side of the project. Flexibility to work occasional weekends is highly desirable.

Schedule & Work Environment: Onsite during the first few weeks of the project. Opportunity to transition to a hybrid schedule once training and onboarding are complete. Approximately 4-month temporary project.
