The Office of Animal Welfare has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary CLATR Instructor to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Principal Veterinarian, the Temporary CLATR Instructor is responsible for delivering consistent, high-quality, and compliant training to research and operations staff by providing hands-on technical instruction, maintaining instructional resources, and supporting complex procedures. The position serves as a critical bridge between veterinary oversight, training program development, and day-to-day research operations.
Key Responsibilities
Training & Instructional Activities (55%)
Deliver hands-on training to students, faculty, and staff in regulatory compliance, animal handling, and technical procedures (e.g., substance administration, venipuncture, euthanasia) across multiple species.
Provide and monitor general anesthesia for multiple species during training and instructional activities.
Adapt instructional approaches to meet the needs of learners with diverse backgrounds and experience levels while maintaining required course standards.
Support surgical and procedural instruction, including anesthesia monitoring and technical guidance.
Create, update, and deliver educational materials, including classroom content, demonstration models, and video tutorials.
Assist in the development and continuous improvement of training programs, laboratory procedures, and instructional resources.
Operational & Technical Support (20%)
Maintain and manage a colony of rodents, including health monitoring and assigning rodents to classes in a manner that prioritizes welfare, supports the 3Rs, and upholds compliance with institutional and regulatory standards
Maintain clinical, diagnostic, and laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality and readiness for training and research support.
Maintain instructional spaces, including cleaning, stocking, and ensuring availability of supplies.
Plan and manage inventory to support ongoing classroom and laboratory activities.
Provide real-time technical guidance to research staff on procedures, complications, and best practices.
Support multiple concurrent training and operational needs with minimal supervision while ensuring high-quality outcomes.
Program Coordination Support (10%)
Coordinate training activities across departments using systems such as learning management systems, Microsoft Bookings, Outlook, and other platforms.
Assign, track, and document training completion and compliance within electronic systems.
Coordinate logistics and support services for courses, including scheduling, materials, and classroom readiness.
Provide indirect oversight and coordination of student employees assisting with classroom and training support functions.
Ensure accurate documentation related to training records and controlled substance use.
Compliance & Regulatory Support (5%)
Ensure all training and activities align with institutional policies, regulatory requirements, and animal welfare standards.
Utilize, monitor, and document controlled substances in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Reinforce compliance with research protocols through training and operational oversight.
Collaborate with the Attending Veterinarian (AV) and Principal Compliance Veterinarian (PCV) to maintain up-to-date course content and training resources.
Serve as a subject matter expert for rodent techniques, animal welfare, and research methodology.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement (5%)
Work collaboratively with veterinary leadership and research units to identify training needs and improve program effectiveness.
Analyze training outcomes and design strategic improvements to enhance learner competency, animal welfare, and research quality
Develop new instructional content and share resources with other CLATR instructors.
Participate in team-based efforts to enhance training delivery methods and instructional quality and consistency across instructors.
Stay current on emerging techniques and procedures and integrate them into training programs.
Identify trends and gaps in the institutional training program and recommend corrective actions.
Additional Responsibilities (5%)
Work independently with strong organization, dependability, and communication skills.
Perform related duties as required to support CLATR's training and operational mission.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Business, Applied Science, Communications, Informatics, Social Sciences, Technology or other research-related field
- The minimum years of experience required are 2.

- Experience successfully navigating communication of sensitive information with a high level of tact, discretion, and diplomacy.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious working relationships at all levels while effectively addressing complex and sensitive issues.
- Experience with program operations support in an administrative office at the University of Washington
Working Conditions
This position is onsite at UW Seattle Campus. The Office of Animal Welfare hosts onsite trainings and events, for which in-person attendance is mandatory.

The Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) is a key component of UW's animal care and use program. OAW supports the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), as well as researchers and educators who use live vertebrate animals and cephalopods as part of their research.
