Job description

Temporary Program Assistant

The City of Pleasanton is excited to announce an opportunity for a dedicated individual to join our team as a Temporary Program Assistant in the Public Works Department, Utilities Division. In this part-time, temporary role, you will support the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's wastewater collection system. Typical assignments include assisting with sewer line repairs, hydro-flushing activities, CCTV inspections of sewer mains, stormwater infrastructure inspections, pump station maintenance support, and preparing and operating service vehicles and equipment. This position offers a dynamic, field-based environment where your work helps protect public health, support environmental compliance, and maintain reliable wastewater services for the community every day!

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Hands-on and interested in learning the day-to-day operation of water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Team-oriented, with the ability to work effectively as part of a crew or independently.
  • Customer service-minded, able to communicate effectively and courteously with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Dependable, safety-conscious, and able to remain alert to hazards while working in the field and around equipment and chemicals.
  • Positive, willing to learn, and ready to contribute to the City of Pleasanton team.

In this role, you will:

  • Assist with the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's wastewater collection system.
  • Support sewer line repair work and hydro-flushing activities.
  • Conduct or assist with CCTV inspections of sewer mains.
  • Inspect stormwater infrastructure.
  • Assist with pump station maintenance activities.
  • Prepare and operate service vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Remove debris and perform related tasks necessary to maintain reliable wastewater services for the community.

A few reasons you'll love working with us:

  • You will have variety in your workโ€”you'll gain hands-on experience supporting several important wastewater maintenance functions.
  • You will have a meaningful impactโ€”your work directly contributes to public health, environmental protection, and the reliability of essential City infrastructure.
  • You'll work in a team-oriented environment alongside Public Works staff supporting critical municipal services.
  • You will have an excellent opportunity to learn the wastewater profession and gain experience using specialized equipment such as hydro-flushers and CCTV inspection systems.
  • You'll have the satisfaction of helping solve problems and maintain infrastructure that serves the entire community.

A few challenges you might face:

  • Working outdoors in a physically demanding environment and in various weather conditions.
  • Occasionally working in unpleasant environments associated with wastewater infrastructure.
  • Responding to emergency situations and changing daily priorities.
  • Safely performing work around traffic, confined spaces, and wastewater facilities.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Familiar with safe work procedures and the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Mechanically inclined, with troubleshooting ability and an interest in learning specialized wastewater equipment.
  • Able to follow instructions, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Able to perform physically demanding work safely and efficiently.
  • Professional, dependable, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision while staying organized and meeting deadlines.
