Job Description

The Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to join their team.

About this Opportunity

The Research Scientist/Engineer 1 with the Latimer Laboratory engages in neuroscience. Specifically, this role is involved in the characterization and analysis of cell and animal models of neurodegenerative disease, and the histologic and molecular characterization of human tissue samples from donors with and without neurodegenerative disease. This role contributes to research projects that aim to understand the molecular mechanism of neurodegeneration, particularly in the context of multiple pathologies of aging.

This is a full-time day shift position located at Harborview Medical Center with occasional telework. The specific work schedule will be discussed with the hiring manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform all aspects of C. elegans husbandry, behavior/motility assessments, and genetic manipulations and confirmation experiments using C. elegans.
  • Perform digital image analysis.
  • Participate in Nanostring experiments.

Required Qualifications

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Department.

  • Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, chemistry, biology, other biological science, or related field.
  • 1 year of experience with C. elegans handling and experimental approaches.

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to perform genetic crosses and behavior assays, including swimming and crawling behavior.
  • Organized and able to write thorough documentation of experiments and protocols
  • Possesses good communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Basic molecular bench work skills (i.e., PCR)
