The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the incumbent functions as part of a team of Assistant Deans providing comprehensive academic support to SIPA's student population of over 1400 students across degree programs, dual degree programs, and majors. In this capacity, the incumbent is charged with advancing the overall mission of the University, SIPA, and the Office of Student Affairs, and enhancing the student experience at the School. Responsibilities span the following aspects of the Student Affairs operation including major academic advising, academic policies and requirements, registration, student life, and student events and outreach. SIPA's Office of Student Affairs is committed to excellence in student service and seeks professionals with experience assessing student needs, as well as designing, planning and delivering student programs. Candidates with international education experience and/or experience working with undergraduate students and student life programming are preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Advises Columbia students pursuing SIPA's major, part-time, full-time, and specialized programs on course selection, registration issues and degree requirements, and provides specialized advising, communication, and programming for subsets of the student population such as undergraduate students and Columbia University dual-degree students.
  • Supports events and activities sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, including but not limited to new student Orientation, training sessions and workshops, and SIPA Town Halls.
  • Supports OSA's work relating to student groups, extracurricular activities, student involvement programs, and the SIPA Student Directory. Participates in social, professional, community, and cultural programs for over 1400 students.
  • Serves as a member of SIPA's Admissions Committee. Reads admission applications annually as determined by the Associate Dean in close consultation with the Executive Director of Admissions and Financial Aid.
  • Participates in admissions, recruitment and marketing events for prospective students
  • When requested by the Associate Dean, serves on OSA's Discipline Hearing Panels (considering matters of academic integrity and social misconduct) and OSA's Committee of Deans (considering matters of satisfactory academic progress).
  • Plans and executes programming and student events, speaker series, receptions and other special events and student retention initiatives as necessary. Identifies topics and speakers for events.
  • Supervises OSA coordinator staff as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as requested.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Three years of related administrative experience required, including student services, event coordination, and staff supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal, administrative, and organizational skills, and a commitment to a collaborative work style.
  • Experience facilitating and coordinating meetings, networks, and committees.
  • Ability to create an inclusive work and academic environment and to collaborate with a diverse student, alumni, and staff community.
  • Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently and set priorities. Must be detail and deadline oriented.
  • Must be able to work independently and demonstrate discretion and judgment in sensitive matters, particularly around student discipline and student mental and physical health.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Advanced degree desirable.
