Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System is seeking a highly skilled and VMware certified professional (VCP) Senior Firewall Engineer – Network Segmentation to lead the design, implementation, and management of advanced network segmentation strategies that protect critical infrastructure and sensitive data across our virtual server environments.

This role is pivotal in enhancing enterprise security through technologies such as VLANs, subnets, micro-segmentation, and next-generation firewall configurations. The engineer will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including Network Infrastructure, Server Services, Firewall, and IT Security to ensure alignment with SRHS’s security architecture and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

Network Segmentation & Architecture

  • Design and implement robust network and application segmentation strategies based on risk assessments and compliance requirements.
  • Configure VLANs, subnets, ACLs, and micro-segmentation to isolate critical assets and enforce security policies.

Firewall & Security Operations

  • Optimize firewall rules and policies to support segmentation and threat mitigation.
  • Monitor network traffic for anomalies and potential breaches.
  • Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to identify and remediate segmentation gaps.

Access Control & Application Isolation

  • Enforce least privilege access across segmented environments.
  • Develop application-level segmentation strategies to isolate workloads and enhance security posture.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with infrastructure and security teams to define segmentation requirements and ensure seamless integration.
  • Communicate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Documentation & Support

  • Maintain detailed documentation of segmentation designs, configurations, and procedures.
  • Provide expert-level troubleshooting and support for complex segmentation issues.

Strategic Planning

  • Contribute to the evolution of SRHS’s enterprise security architecture with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • 7+ years of IT experience, including 4–6 years in large-scale network infrastructure administration (1,000+ nodes preferred).
  • Deep knowledge of TCP/IP, IOS, routing protocols, VPN, wireless protocols, perimeter security, Layer 3 switching, and VoIP systems.
  • Experience with firewall rule optimization and security assessments.

Certifications

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

Preferred Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Mathematics, or related field.

Experience

  • 10+ years of relevant IT experience.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware NSX.

Certifications

  • VMware Certified Professional – Network Virtualization (VCP-NV)
