Job description

Hiring: Sheet Metal Technician$32.00/Hour + $140/Day Per Diem📍 Location: Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia

We are seeking experienced Sheet Metal Mechanics to support shipbuilding and repair operations in Newport News, VA. This position offers $32/hour plus $140/day per diem.

Responsibilities
  • Install foundations, ventilation systems, bulkheads, and shipboard furniture according to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Perform sheet metal fabrication, including cutting, forming, and assembling metal components.
  • Read and interpret ventilation assembly drawings, blueprints, sketches, weld symbols, material specifications, datum points, and reference lines.
  • Accurately use fractional and decimal measurements to ensure proper fit-up and fabrication.
  • Lay out and fabricate piece parts to required dimensions and specifications.
  • Assemble fabricated components into completed units while maintaining quality standards.
  • Operate hand and power tools, including drills, grinders, and rivet guns.
  • Utilize shop equipment such as drill presses and press brakes.
Work Environment

This role is based in one of the nation's largest shipyards located in Newport News, Virginia. Work is performed both onboard Navy vessels and in fabrication shops. Employees should be comfortable working in an industrial environment with varying weather conditions and physically demanding tasks.

Available Shifts
  • 1st Shift: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM
  • 2nd Shift: 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM
  • 3rd Shift: 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM

Candidates must be flexible and available to work any shift. Overtime opportunities may be available but are not guaranteed.

Requirements
  • Previous sheet metal fabrication and installation experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
  • Experience using hand tools and fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to work safely in a shipyard and industrial environment.
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the position and wear required PPE.
Compensation

$32.00 per hour

$140 per day per diem

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
