Job description

Chair of Mathematical Science Department

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Department Chair provides leadership and oversight for the administrative, academic, and operational functions of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The Chair teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels, supports and leads faculty in ongoing curriculum development, promotes scholarly research and academic excellence, and advances initiatives that strengthen the department’s academic programs. The position also works to secure external funding, support accreditation efforts, and enhance the department’s visibility, partnerships, and contributions to the university’s mission.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a senior administrative and academic leadership position requiring significant experience to elevate and advance the department in interdisciplinary collaboration within the college and across the university through applied mathematics that leads to enhanced activity in sponsored research, student research participation, and partnerships with industry, government, and Houston region stakeholders.

  • Provides leadership and oversight for the administrative, academic, and operational functions of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
  • Teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and maintains an active record of teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with university expectations.
  • Leads faculty in ongoing curriculum development, program assessment, and continuous improvement to support student success and program quality.
  • Promotes and supports faculty research, scholarly activities, and external funding opportunities.
  • Oversees departmental planning, faculty development, budgeting, scheduling, and student academic matters.
  • Supports accreditation processes and ensures compliance with university policies and academic standards.
  • Represents the department within the college, university, and external communities to advance the department’s mission and visibility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (COSET).

FTE 1.0

Hiring Range $96,918.90 - $141,283.06

Education

A Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution is required.

Required Licensing/Certification

None required.

  • Demonstrable commitment to undergraduate and graduate education as well as proven record of scholarly achievement in the field of Mathematical Sciences.

Work Experience

  • A strong record of scholarly achievement, including peer‑reviewed publications and evidence of successful grantsmanship.
  • Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor/Full Professor with tenure. Demonstrated experience in academic leadership or program administration in a higher education setting.
  • A distinguished record of teaching, research, and service, with evidence of intellectual leadership and the ability to advance the mission and strategic goals of the department.
  • Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.

Preferred

  • Experience in teaching, research, and service at a four‑year higher education institution. Demonstrated administrative or leadership experience at the department, program, or project level.
  • Experience in faculty mentoring, curriculum development, program assessment, and strategic planning.
  • Evidence of successful collaboration and the ability to foster a collegial and productive academic environment.
