JOB DESCRIPTION

PT Library Assistant
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of clerical duties relating to customer service and the overall operation of the public library.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs high-quality customer service functions in person, via telephone, email, and web chat; provides assistance and information related to library services, fees, procedures, programs or other issues; directs visitors to areas of the library; provides collection information to patrons; assists patrons in locating books/reference materials, in using computer catalog, Internet and other library resources and equipment; registers new patrons; enters/updates patron information in computer; issues library cards; collects/records moneys in payment of fines, fees, or other library services; removes fine data from computer.
Assists patrons with printing, photocopies, scans, and faxes.
Checks library materials in/out; scans materials in library's computerized circulation system; retrieves books from book drop; identifies reserved books; sorts/arranges materials on book carts for shelving.
Places library books/materials in appropriate shelving areas; sorts and shelves books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, audios, and other library materials in appropriate order; moves and shelves materials as needed; reads labels to ensure materials are arranged properly.
Assists with processing library materials, including covering, labeling, and stamping. Assists with book and audio/video donations.
Schedules use of library meeting/conference rooms by patrons or community organizations.
Performs general tasks related to library operations, which may include changing and maintaining displays, opening/closing library, turning equipment on/off, or monitoring/straightening/cleaning public areas of library.
Ensures patrons comply with all applicable rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, volunteers, library patrons, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Operates a personal computer, hand held devices, general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of library apps, word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
Provides support for in person, virtual, and off-site library programs by preparing supplies, setting up/taking down tables and chairs, engaging with patrons and the public, and promoting library services.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required, assigned or requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school education or GED is required.
One (1) year of experience in library or customer service work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires the ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Requires the ability to bend, crouch, twist, reach, and crawl.

Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
