Job Title: Automation Project Engineer Location: Mason, OH Zip Code: 45040 Start Date: Right Away Job Type: Contract Pay Rate: $60HR-$75HR Keywords: #AutomationProject Engineer #Conveyor #Robotics JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Automation Project Engineer is responsible for executing the design, implementation, and commissioning of physical automation systems across distribution and manufacturing environments. This role operates within defined project scopes and deliverables, supporting capital automation initiatives by translating requirements into executable engineering designs and driving implementation through startup. The position is primarily project-based, with work directly tied to capital project phases including design, build, and commissioning. This position is an external contract role delivering defined engineering services on a project-by-project basis and is not considered part of the organizational structure or responsible for ongoing operational ownership. Key Responsibilities 1. Engineering Design & Specification Translate high-level requirements into: o Equipment specifications o Mechanical layouts o Electrical and controls architecture Develop: o Block diagrams o System design documentation o RFP packages and technical evaluation criteria 2. Vendor & Integration Management Coordinate with system integrators and equipment suppliers Validate vendor designs against specifications Support vendor selection through technical evaluation Track deliverables and execution milestones 3. Construction & Installation Coordinate on-site installation activities Manage vendor schedules and daily execution Ensure adherence to design standards and safety requirements 4. Testing & Commissioning Support FAT and SAT execution Participate in system startup activities Troubleshoot technical issues during commissioning 5. Documentation & Handover Develop initial: o System procedures o Technical documentation o Training materials Ensure complete and structured handoff to operations Expected Deliverables May Include: Engineering design packages and specifications Vendor bid packages and evaluation summaries Installation and commissioning support documentation Startup readiness and testing reports Role Boundaries This role will: Works within defined project scope and timeline Delivers engineering outputs tied to asset creation Supports capital project execution phases This role does not include responsibility for: Define automation strategy Own technology selection decisions Manage long-term operations or maintenance Hold organizational leadership responsibilities REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor"s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Controls Engineering 5+ years in automation systems: Conveyor & sortation, AS/RS, Robotics / AMRs / AGVs, Goods to Picker Experience with: Mechanical, electrical, and controls integration, Vendor and integrator coordination, Installation and commissioning Experience integrating automation systems with WMS/WCS platforms (e.g., SAP EWM) is preferred. Experience in high-volume distribution center or fulfillment environments preferred Work Structure Effort is expected to be tracked against defined project phases (design, execution, commissioning) to support capital project accounting and reporting. Feasibility will be expense funded May coordinate and direct the work of additional contract engineers or vendors as project scope scales. Deliverables primarily tied to: Design phase, Execution phase, Startup phase Work location can be remote with regular check-ins at Mason offices. Work space can be made available at the Mason offices.
