Job Title: IN-FSSA-Pharmacy Technician
Location: Richmond, IN 47374
Job Type: Contract

Job Description:

  • Fill Medication Fill Sheets generated by the Pharmacist for the automated dispensing cabinet, including controlled substances for the pharmacists to check.  Frequency and schedule as determined by the Pharmacist per patient medication usage.
  • Fill Controlled Substances,  record quantities, and keep a running record of stock on hand.
  • Deliver and stock the automated dispensing cabinets for each patient unit.  Verify correct medication, quantity, and nearest Expiration Dates per the automated dispensing cabinet.  Re-enter and adjust inventory for returned meds in the Automated Dispensing Cabinet.
  • Fill, as needed, Short Requisition orders (patient bulk medications and devices), out-of-stock, and new order fill lists.  After the Pharmacist has checked, deliver to the automated dispensing cabinet on the patient unit, as needed. The Pharmacy Technician is to initial all paperwork, which is to be filed in the Pharmacy.
  • Deliver refilled Emergency Drug Kits to patient areas, as needed.
  • Monitor and review Temporary Leave/Discharge requests for accuracy.  Process and fill the required amount of medication as indicated for leave length or per the Discharge Policy.  Set out for the Pharmacist to check.  Deliver to the patient unit.  Obtain the signature of delivery from qualified staff (QMA, LPN or RN).  If there is a controlled substance, then both the Pharmacy Technician and the qualified staff member must count the control and initial both copies of the paperwork. One (1) copy stays with the medications, the other is returned to the Pharmacy for filing.
  • Order medications daily from the contract vendor per re-order points established in stock areas.  Monitor stock levels and outdates.  Return items for credit to the vendor as needed.
  • Daily medication orders are to be checked in as soon as possible, with priority being given to refrigerated items and controlled substances, if any.  This is not be done by the ordering Pharmacy Technician to prevent diversion.  All medications are checked for expiration date, accuracy, and condition. Restock shelves with the daily order.  Stocking is according to the nearest expiration date at the front.  Any medications with new NDC numbers are given to the Pharmacist to scan to coordinate with the automated dispensing system.
  • Package bulk medications for unit dosing, as needed.
  • Restock returned meds from the automated dispensing system.
  • Pull outdated medication for possible return to the vendor for credit.  Perform monthly checks of medication stock shelves for expiration dates.  Rotate stock.
  • Properly dispose of patient medications brought into the hospital at admission.
  • Assist in the physical inventory of pharmaceuticals, as required.
  • Record daily fill errors.  To be documented and tabulated monthly.
  • Maintain unit dose packaging list and keep medications packaged in unit dose as required.
  • Do quarterly Med Room inspections for outdated and discontinued medications.  Report improper functioning or misuse of the refrigerator, automated dispensing cabinet, and air temperature to the Pharmacy Director.  Clean refrigerator and automated dispensing cabinet, as needed.
  • Housekeeping duties include:  Cleaning sink and counter area, refrigerator, fill counter areas, counting trays, unit dose packaging equipment, dusting file cabinet tops and furniture, desk areas, sweeping outside entrance, cleaning windows, vacuuming floors, cleaning dishes and cleaning bathroom, including floor.
  • Perform various tasks as assigned.
