The internship must comply with OPT regulations, including reporting requirements and work hours, and can be paid or unpaid depending on the role and employer policies.

Can I use CPT for an internship?

Yes, a Temporary Internship OPT Cpt can be used for internships if the internship is directly related to the student's field of study and authorized by the school's international student office. What is the difference between Temporary Internship Opt Cpt vs Temporary Internship H-1B?

AspectTemporary Internship Opt CptTemporary Internship H-1B
CredentialsF-1 visa, Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT)H-1B visa, employer sponsorship, specialized degree
Work EnvironmentAcademic or employer site, limited durationFull-time employment, often in specialized fields
UsageInternships during or after studies, practical trainingTemporary work authorization for specialized roles

Temporary Internship Opt Cpt allows F-1 students to gain practical experience during their studies or after graduation through authorized training. In contrast, Temporary Internship H-1B is a work visa for specialized roles, requiring employer sponsorship and longer-term employment. While Opt Cpt is more flexible for students, H-1B is used for more permanent employment in the industry.

Are there ways to work around CPT OPT?

For a Temporary Internship OPT, students must follow USCIS regulations, which generally do not allow workarounds. Engaging in unauthorized employment or attempting to bypass OPT or CPT requirements can lead to visa violations and potential immigration issues. It is important to adhere to the legal employment options available under F-1 status and consult with an international student advisor for guidance.
