The Samaritan Inn is a comprehensive housing stability program that supports individuals in realizing dignity and gaining independence.
Position Description
Position Title: Cook (Temporary)
Reports to: Kitchen Manager
Pay Range: $19 - $22 per hour
This is a TEMPORARY full-time, non-exempt position to cover for an employee on leave. We expect this assignment to last 8-12 weeks. Compensation is commensurate with experience and aligned with the organization’s salary structure and budget.
Summary of the Job:
The Cook at The Samaritan Inn plays a vital role in preparing nutritious and wholesome meals for our residents, ensuring they receive the care and nourishment they need. The position involves managing the full food preparation process — from menu planning and ingredient prep to cooking, serving, and clean-up. The Cook works closely with staff, volunteers, and residents, contributing to a supportive environment that fosters health and well-being.
This position includes evening and weekend hours.
Essential Functions:
  • Prepare and cook hot and cold food items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner according to established menus.
  • Serve meals and manage leftovers, adhering to proper safety and food storage guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with local and state health, safety, and sanitation regulations.
  • Safely operate kitchen equipment, maintaining cleanliness in both the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Monitor food storage areas and help manage incoming food donations.
  • Oversee the food preparation process, ensuring efficient and organized meal service for large groups, including children.
  • Supervise and direct volunteers and residents involved in food service tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to a positive and organized kitchen environment.
Required Education amp; Experience:
  • Minimum of two years of experience in food handling, preparation, and serving.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Food Service Manager’s License from the State of Texas.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a large-scale food service operation, especially in a nonprofit or institutional setting.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certification in food safety or similar programs.
Core Competencies / Soft Skills:
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
