Other Conditions: Temporary, part-time position through June 30, 2026. Continuation dependent upon availability of funds, GA eligibility requirements and satisfactory performance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Under the supervision of the director of Ka Ulu Hoi, assist with the writing, editing, and publication of Kawaihuelani's monthly online newspaper.
  • Work with the director to proofread and edit submissions prior to publication.
  • Upload completed articles each month to the Ka Ulu Hoi website and social media accounts, and update these pages as necessary.
  • Acquire pictures for each article published, as needed.
  • Meet with student-writers of the newspaper, both individually and in groups as necessary, to plan, develop, and improve their submissions to the paper.
  • Contribute one original article to each issue of Ka Ulu Hoi published during the GA's tenure.
  • Under the supervision of the director, conduct research that will enhance the mentorship of student-writers.
  • Other duties, as assignedby the director.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Full time Graduate Student in good standing.
  • BA in Hawaiian language.
  • Ability to edit written Hawaiian using various strategies, and in accordance with the context of language production (e.g., standard University Hawaiian versus native speaker language production).
  • Experience writing Hawaiian news articles and opinion pieces, as well as the ability to mentor students relatively new to this practice.
  • Comfortable using Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and Zoom.

Desired Qualifications
  • Current standing as a Graduate Student in Kawaihuelani.
  • Experience managing a professional website and/or social media account.
  • Experience taking video and stills for online publication.
  • Research experience in Hawaiian language newspapers.
