Graduate Research Assistant (Vehicle Occupancy Safety Studies)Other Conditions: To begin approximately June 2026 with an appointment period ending on December 31, 2026 with possibility of funding extension to June 30, 2027. Continuation contingent upon program needs, satisfactory performance, and availability of funds. The position will work an average of 20 hours per week and, with prior approval, up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
Duties and Responsibilities:- Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator Dr. Karl Kim and other faculty and staff, assists in the coordination, preparation, and execution of site across the State of Hawaii to collect observational survey data for statewide seat belt usage, child safety seat usage, motorcycle helmet usage, and riding in truck bed.
- Compiles data and prepares for analysis; contributes to improvements in the collection.
- Performs statistical analysis; organizes, reviews, and analyzes all collected data and research findings.
- Reviews and studies past site observational surveys and its statistical methodologies, findings, and reports; contributes to improvements in analyses of data.
- Produces reports for the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation; drafts, edits, and finalizes written reports.
- Assists with recruitment and training of student observers.
- Maintains and prepares observation equipment and supplies.
- Travel to project-related events, activities, and/or conferences.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:- Classified, full-time (minimum 6 credits) graduate student in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or above) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Certificate and non-degree students are not eligible.
- Bachelor's degree in planning, economics, engineering, public health, education, or other related fields.
- Experience with statistical analyses.
- Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in teams or groups to complete projects.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet frequent deadlines.
- Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations.
Desirable Qualifications:- Experience or willingness to learn GIS and mapping software.
- Knowledge and experience using SAS for statistical analysis tools and Microsoft Excel.
