Job description

Advance Clinical Excellence as a Critical Care Nurse Practitioner in Richmond, VA

Bring better to the bedside in Richmond. In this role, you’ll combine clinical skills with purpose, delivering patient-centered care while driving performance in a supportive environment. You’ll have the autonomy to lead and the resources to grow – while making a difference for patients and families every day.

Comprehensive critical care management for adult patients as part of the Intensivist team providing care for 36 ICU beds, including medical, surgical, neuro and cardiac patients in this level II trauma center. The APP works collaboratively with intensivists, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, consultants, and hospitalist team to deliver high-quality, evidence-based critical care services. Responsibilities include evaluation, stabilization, ongoing management of critically ill patients, and performance of bedside procedures. 

Local Team Collaboration:

  • At Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital, our strong, collaborative team includes four Critical Care APPs and dix Intensivists.
  • Our team at Bon Secours St. Mary’s is part of the larger Critical Care team in the Richmond market, covering ICUs in four local Bon Secours hospitals.
  • Enjoy the peer support of experienced Critical Care APPs and physicians who boast experience from a variety of disciplines associated with the ICU.

Qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience as an independent provider in the ICU (with procedure logs).
  • Board Certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Active Virginia license and DEA preferred.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Scheduling:

  • ICU coverage is comprised of two 12-hour day physicians, one 12-hour day APP and one 12-hour nocturnist Critical Care APP and one night physician.
  • Average of 14 shifts per month, a mix of days and nights, modified block schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide coverage for critically ill adult ICU patients (acute respiratory failure, pneumonia, cardiogenic shock, NSTEMI/STEMI, cardiac arrest, acute, ischemic stroke, sepsis, etc.).
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, develop differential diagnosis, and implement treatment plans.
  • Manage mechanical ventilation in collaboration with respiratory therapy.
  • Coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharges from the ICU.
  • Participate in goals-of-care discussions and family communication when appropriate.
  • Perform bedside procedures within scope of practice and credentialing, including Central venous catheter placement, Arterial line placement, Temporary hemodialysis catheter placement, and Endotracheal intubation. Anesthesia support for airways is available as needed.
  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and handoff communication.
  • Participate in quality improvement and performance initiatives as appropriate.
  • Facilitate ICU admissions from the emergency department, hospitalist services, and outside facilities.
