These positions are often found in industries like government, environmental science, urban planning, and utilities. Temporary GIS professionals may assist with mapping projects, data entry, and spatial analysis to support decision-making. The duration of these jobs varies, ranging from a few weeks to several months, depending on project needs.

What do temporary GIS professionals do?

Temporary GIS professionals often support projects such as updating or creating maps, managing spatial databases, conducting data analysis for environmental studies, or providing technical support during peak workloads. Assignments may range from digitizing and georeferencing data to assisting with field data collection or producing reports and spatial visualizations. You’ll frequently collaborate with full-time GIS staff, engineers, planners, or scientists depending on the nature of the project. The tasks can vary significantly between industries, so flexibility and a willingness to learn new tools or processes quickly are important for success in this temporary capacity.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a temporary GIS?

To thrive as a Temporary GIS professional, you need a foundational understanding of geographic information systems, spatial data analysis, and cartography, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with industry-standard GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, as well as skills in data management and possibly Python scripting, are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical information clearly are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies enable you to quickly adapt, deliver accurate spatial data products, and work effectively within temporary project teams or on short-term assignments.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all GIS technical deliverables across multiple projects, ensuring timely, high-quality outputs aligned with client requirements and company standards.
- Oversee the full GIS workflow, from data acquisition and processing to final integration into immersive environments.
- Maintain strict adherence to standardised data structures, schemas, naming conventions, and metadata protocols for all geospatial datasets.
- Develop, implement, and enforce best-practice GIS data management policies to ensure consistency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Perform advanced geospatial data processing, cleaning, transformation, and quality assurance using ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms.
- Prepare and optimise GIS datasets (vector, raster, elevation/DEM, 3D features, and attribute data) for ingestion into Unreal Engine.
- Utilise Unreal Engine tools and plugins (e.g. ArcGIS Maps SDK for Unreal Engine) to import, geo-reference, and integrate GIS data into real-time 3D environments and digital twins.
- Collaborate closely with Unreal Engine developers, 3D artists, and visualisation teams to troubleshoot geospatial integration issues (coordinate systems, scale, precision, performance optimisation).
- Ensure geospatial accuracy, coordinate reference system alignment, and visual fidelity when translating GIS data into Unreal Engine scenes.
- Manage version control, backups, and archiving of GIS datasets to support project iteration and long-term asset reuse.
- Document GIS processes, data pipelines, and Unreal Engine ingestion workflows to facilitate team knowledge sharing and onboarding.
- Identify and implement opportunities to automate GIS-to-Unreal data pipelines for increased efficiency on large-scale projects.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior GIS team members on data standards, Unreal integration techniques, and project-specific requirements.
- Research and source GIS datasets to support world-building teams.
- Stay current with advancements in GIS technologies, game-engine geospatial tools, and emerging best practices for immersive digital twin development.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Required:
- Proven senior-level experience in GIS data management, processing, and analysis.
- Deep proficiency with ArcGIS, QGIS, or comparable GIS platforms.
- Hands-on experience integrating GIS data into Unreal Engine, including familiarity with the ArcGIS Maps SDK for Unreal Engine or similar geospatial game-engine plugins.
- Strong understanding of coordinate reference systems, projections, and geospatial accuracy requirements.
- Experience preparing and optimising vector, raster, DEM/elevation, and 3D feature datasets for real-time 3D environments.
- Ability to develop and enforce data standards, schemas, and documentation across teams.
- Experience with pipeline automation and scripting (Python or similar) for GIS data workflows.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills
- comfortable working cross-functionally with 3D artists, developers, and project managers.
- Experience managing and mentoring junior team members.
Nice to Have:
- Background in real estate, architecture, urban planning, or related property development industries.
- Familiarity with digital twin platforms and immersive visualisation pipelines.
- Experience with game engines beyond Unreal Engine (e.g. Unity).
- Knowledge of BIM data and its integration with GIS environments.
What We Offer
- A globally distributed, collaborative team at the cutting edge of immersive technology.
- Exposure to high-profile, visionary real estate and placemaking projects worldwide.
- The opportunity to shape GIS best practices and build scalable workflows in an innovative, fast-growing consultancy.
