With a user-centered mindset, the Head of Metadata Services provides forward-thinking leadership, and is responsible for original and copy cataloging, authority control, and development of standards and policies for resource description. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Technical Services, the Head of Metadata Services will lead the department in the creation and ingestion of metadata that facilitates the discoverability of information resources held locally and globally.
Minimum Education and Experience Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution. Five years of related experience in an academic, museum, or specialized library or archive.
- Five years of cataloging experience with original cataloging, subject analysis, and the application of RDA, AACR2, LCC, LCSH, and MARC21.
- Two years of staff supervisory experience or professional leadership experience.
- Experience working in an academic library.
- Experience with an integrated library system and OCLC Connexion.
- Experience with batch loading records and the MarcEdit utility.
- Understanding of xml, Dublin Core, and linked data principles.
- Demonstrated awareness of current and future trends and practices in resource description.
- Experience managing a team project.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Experience working with Ex Libris Alma and Primo.
- Experience with non-MARC metadata schemas and digital collections.
- Working knowledge of one or more non-English languages.
- Evidence of successful and creative management of staff and operations.
- Experience with OpenRefine and data analysis.

- Plan, implement and manage quality control projects and oversee metadata ingestion and database maintenance activities.
- Analyze workflow, set priorities, and organize procedures to fulfill the library's goals and the University's mission.
- Recruit, train, and supervise librarians and staff for growth and professional development.
- Establish and maintain good communication and work relationships with all members of Technical Services, other library departments, and the stakeholders of the University.
- Participate in continuing education, committee service in the library, and professional engagement activities related to metadata and scholarly resource description.
