Job description

Job Summary The Sanitation Temporary Worker is involved with heavy manual, equipment operation, and collecting garbage and refuse. Work involves responsibility for collecting garbage and refuse, and operating a collection truck and equipment. An employee of this class works under close supervision of a Sanitation Operator.

The schedule for the Sanitation Temporary Worker is as needed bases. Essential Job Functions Lifts refuse cans; carries empty and filled refuse tubs considerable distances. Polices the immediate area of refuse containers located on private property.

Dumps refuse tubs in compactor trucks. Washes and cleans refuse equipment. Keeps the loading area in the street clean and free of litter.

Operates truck and refuse collection equipment. Performs other duties as required by the City. Qualifications Any combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to completion of the eighth grade, and some experience in performing heavy manual work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience in refuse collection is preferred. Must have Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or CDL learner's permit. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to properly execute refuse collection.

Some knowledge of refuse collection equipment and practices. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public in the course of the work.

Ability to learn new tasks quickly and to work with a minimum of supervision. Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform sustained and heavy manual labor for long periods of time under varying weather conditions.
