Description of Position:The Science Department is looking for two instructors to teach Scientific Literacy (SCIE 1114) in theFallsemesterof 2026.This course explores what science is and how it is done.It helps studentstodevelopcritical thinking skills byshowing them how to assessthe validity and reliability of scientific studies,to analyze and construct scientific arguments,and to defend their arguments with reasoned evidence.The coursedemonstrateshowscience both influences, and is influencedby,culture and society and teaches studentswhat it means to conduct themselves with professionalisminthe scientific community.
Duties and Responsibilities:SCIE 1114 is delivered in a seminar format thatreliesonin-class discussionand peer-based learning.Therefore,the successful candidateshould be able to encourage andfacilitatedebate on a broad range of topics relating to science.Student deliverables includetwolong-form essays in English,along with two group assignmentswhich the successful candidate willbe requiredto grade in an objectiveandtimelyfashion.The course is delivered as threelectureand three tutorial hours weekly.In addition to these commitments, thesuccessful candidate will alsobe requiredto hold two office hoursweekly.
- A minimum of an M.Sc. in one ofthe natural sciences (astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, or physics); Ph.D. preferred.
- Experience teaching ata post-secondaryinstitution required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, including the capacity to grade student essays.
- Experiencefacilitatingsmall group discussion.
- Demonstrated interest andproficiencyinone or more ofthe history,philosophy, methods, and ethics ofscience.
