Job Description:

About the Role:

The Claims Examiner is an early-career professional who supports Disney's Corporate Risk Management organization by administering workers' compensation claims in a way that protects the brand while enabling world-class storytelling and guest experiences. In this role, you will independently manage a portfolio of occupational injury and illness claims, applying sound judgment and problem-solving skills to deliver fair, timely, and compliant outcomes for Cast Members and the company.

Project Hire Assignment: This position is a temporary Project Hire assignment expected to last approximately six (6) months. Employment is intended to support a specific business need for a limited duration and there is no guarantee of extension, conversion, or placement into a regular full-time position at the conclusion of the assignment.

Responsibilities:

As a Claims Examiner, you will handle workers' compensation claims from initial investigation through resolution, ensuring benefits are administered in accordance with California Labor Code and internal guidelines while supporting Disney's commitment to a safe, innovative, and collaborative workplace. This intermediate-level role requires you to analyze information, recommend solutions with moderate guidance, and work independently while partnering across teams-helping safeguard the company's interests and supporting injured Cast Members in their recovery.

  • Administer workers' compensation benefits for injured Cast Members, including investigation, review and analysis of medical reports, arranging medical examinations, and rating permanent disability.
  • Communicate effectively with Cast Members, physicians, attorneys, and other providers to gather information, explain claim decisions, and facilitate appropriate care and benefits.
  • Establish and maintain case reserves in accordance with California Self-Insurance Plans and department guidelines, using strong analytical skills to evaluate liability and exposure.
  • Oversee vocational rehabilitation benefits with a focus on returning Cast Members to gainful employment whenever possible.
  • Utilize automated claims management systems, paperless document management tools, and web-based portals to document, track, and manage claims in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain frequent contact with multiple stakeholders, including injured Cast Members, area and department management, medical providers, and other professionals, while demonstrating a professional, courteous, and positive demeanor.
  • Work within established levels of authority, seeking supervision as needed or required by internal procedures and guidelines, and provide informal guidance to new team members on claims processes.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years administering occupational or workers' compensation claims in California.
  • Designation as a Workers' Compensation Claims Examiner in the State of California, per California Department of Insurance guidelines.
  • Required: California Self-Insurance Plans Administrator Certification.
  • Proficient understanding of key elements of the California Labor Code related to workers' compensation benefits and claim administration.
  • Strong analytical skills in evaluating liability, setting appropriate reserves, and developing action plans for claim resolution.
  • Ability to perform detailed evaluation of claims and permanent disability ratings.
  • Proficient use of automated claims management systems, paperless document management systems, and multiple web access portals.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple issues and meet department expectations and objectives.
  • Effective listening, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver concise and informative summaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multifaceted teams and build strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Early-career, independent worker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze a range of issues and recommend solutions with moderate guidance.

Preferred Qualifications:
