Job description

DCAA Compliance Accountant / Cost Accountant - Government Contracting
Job Description
This role focuses on government contract accounting, cost compliance, and audit readiness in a defense contracting environment. The DCAA Compliance Accountant / Cost Accountant operates with an "audit-ready every day" mindset, embedding FAR-compliant practices into daily accounting activities so that future audits require minimal preparation. The position also leverages Deltek Replicon as a payroll and hours-tracking system to support financial analysis, cost monitoring, and planning across defense programs. As part of a small, growing defense organization, this role offers the opportunity to wear multiple hats, work closely with leadership, and expand responsibilities as the business scales.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain continuous compliance with FAR, CAS, and related government cost accounting regulations, with specific emphasis on FAR 31.205.
  • Apply FAR 31.205 cost principles on a daily basis to properly identify and treat allowable and unallowable costs.
  • Maintain ongoing audit readiness so that DCAA audits require minimal last-minute preparation.
  • Support DCAA audits, including incurred cost submissions, pre-award surveys, and accounting system reviews.
  • Establish, analyze, and support indirect cost rates with strong audit defensibility.
  • Structure and monitor direct labor and costs by contract and project to ensure accurate cost allocation.
  • Use Deltek Replicon for labor distribution and hours tracking to support compliant cost accounting.
  • Perform payroll-based cost analysis to ensure accurate and compliant labor and overhead charging.
  • Leverage Deltek Replicon data for financial analysis, forecasting, and planning tied to government programs.
  • Proactively identify and address compliance risks before they develop into audit issues.
  • Partner with leadership, engineering teams, and external auditors to support audit-safe decision making.
  • Support the continued build-out and improvement of defense-specific accounting and compliance processes.

Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Experience supporting government contract accounting in a defense or federal contracting environment.
  • Direct, hands-on experience applying FAR Part 31.205; general familiarity is not sufficient.
  • Experience supporting or interfacing with DCAA audits.
  • Working knowledge of CAS and related government cost accounting requirements.
  • Experience using Deltek Replicon, or similar Deltek tools, for payroll and hours tracking.
  • Experience using Deltek Replicon, or similar Deltek tools, for cost analysis and financial planning.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance.
  • Experience in fund accounting, cost accounting, and financial reporting and analysis.
  • Practical knowledge of FAR and DCAA audit processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Former DCAA auditor experience or direct, extensive interface experience with DCAA.
  • Experience as a Sr. Cost Accountant, Compliance Accountant, or similar role in a government-contracting environment.
  • Experience using Deltek data beyond timekeeping, including variance analysis, forecasting, and planning.
  • Professional certifications such as CPA or CDFM.
  • Interest in working in a small, growing defense organization with high visibility and impact.
  • Desire to help shape long-term, audit-ready processes from the ground up in a growth-oriented role.

Work Environment
This position is based in an office environment and follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on site. The role relies heavily on Deltek Replicon and related financial systems for timekeeping, payroll, cost analysis, and planning. As part of a small, scaling defense organization, the work environment is collaborative and fast-paced, offering close interaction with leadership and engineering teams and the opportunity to influence and build out defense-specific accounting and compliance processes.
