Job description

The Spencer Foundation is dedicated to advancing education through the funding of research that addresses critical questions and opportunities in education. We support research that is rigorous, intellectually ambitious, and which supports equitable education systems in order to cultivate learning and transform lives.
Job Summary
The Program Research Assistant (PRA) is a temporary doctoral student position within the Foundation's Research and Evaluation Team. The PRA is responsible for supporting the design, implementation, and maintenance of the Foundation's research and evaluation activities, as well as contributing to special projects and initiatives led by executive staff and members of the Research and Evaluation Team. In this role, the PRA participates in the development and execution of research studies, program assessments, and other internal learning and evaluation efforts that inform the Foundation's philanthropic strategy and decision-making.
Assignments may involve conducting substantial quantitative and qualitative research, data analysis, literature reviews, and written reporting. The position therefore requires a versatile analytical skill set, familiarity with research and evaluation methods, an understanding of the Foundation's mission and activities, and a strong ability to collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders on diverse projects.
This temporary position lasts 11 months and will work up to 19 hours per week with a hybrid work schedule. One in-office day per week is required. This position is similar to a Graduate Research Assistant.
Requirements
Essential Job Functions
  • Working with program staff to support existing philanthropic programs and initiatives;
  • Assisting program staff in conducting research and evaluation activities to inform the design and implementation of new philanthropic programs and initiatives;
  • Collaborating with foundation staff; and
  • Preparing reports for internal and external audiences.

Education and Experience
  • Current enrollment at an accredited university doctoral program, located in the Chicago area, with a primary research focus in education required.
  • At least two years of experience using qualitative research methods on one or more research projects required.
  • Qualitative research experience should include designing and conducting interviews and focus groups, coding and thematic analysis, and proficiency with qualitative data software such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti, or Dedoose. Candidates must demonstrate a strong equity lens and experience with equity-centered or community-based participatory research methods.
  • Experience with project management is a plus.

Physical/Sensory and Environmental Requirements
  • Office setting. This position is a hybrid role, with mandatory one (1) day in the office. Additional in-office days may be required. This schedule is subject to change.
  • A significant amount of time is spent doing detailed computer work, either sitting or standing.
  • The primary repetitive motion in which the incumbent is engaged is keyboarding.
