Position: Cold Rolling Mill Operator

Overview

We are presently looking for top talent to join our diverse organization. This position will exhibit process improvements that impact the bottom line in a performance driven organization. It is essential that you are transparent and lead in a collaborative way.

Duties & Responsibilities

In collaboration with the Cold Rolling Team Leader the Cold Rolling Mill Operator sets up, operates, maintains and monitors all operations of the cold rolling and temper mill, to reduce the thickness and produce specific surface finishes on the steel coils to specified tolerances in order to prepare the material for annealing, slitting or for delivery to the customer.

Specific duties include:

Operations/Quality

  • Reading production schedules and work orders to determine processing sequences and reduction patterns to efficiently run the mill operations.
  • Starting conveyors to load steel coils and/or signaling crane operators to move coils to the required position.
  • Positioning steel coils on conveyors or mandrels, using crane, chain hoists or grabs.
  • Monitoring process information while the product is being rolled, including automatic x-ray gauge thickness measurement, shape measurement and pinhole detection to ensure that the product achieves the desired surface and thickness parameters.
  • Rewinding and inspecting the coils after the cold mill operation, clearly identifying any suspect material for further processing, or placing the material on hold for quality inspections.
  • Recording data from the operator screen for Quality Assurance purposes to ensure that the steel coils meet the order specifications. Adjusting controls to maintain roll speed, coolant flow, roll force, roll gap, steering, mill balance, air wipes, squeegee roll gaps utilizing output form operator control screens. Repairing, replacing, and maintaining mill equipment as needed, using hand tools.
  • Placing completed steel coils on conveyors, using crane, chain hoists or grabs, or signaling crane operators to transport them to subsequent stations.
  • Examining the steel strip to ensure the final product parameters and surface conforms to specifications, utilizing knowledge of customer requirements and placing any suspect coils on hold for quality control/inspection.
  • Changing work rolls and back up rolls using crane, hoists and chains based on tonnage requirements, customer requirements and surface roughness specifications.
  • Direct and train other workers to change rolls, operate mill equipment, remove coils and cobbles, and band and load material.
  • Signal and assist other workers to remove and position equipment, fill hoppers, and feed materials into the mill.
  • Checking emulsion conditions, making additions or reductions in concentration based on rolling requirements and surface quality.
  • Taking samples of finished steel coils for hardness, roughness, gauge testing, using testing equipment.
  • Using steel strapping and hand tools to band the finished steel coils for transport to the next production unit or stock.
  • Signaling crane operators to deposit finished steel coils in storage areas.
  • Printing and attaching rolling identification tags on finished product for subsequent processing and traceability.
  • Reporting maintenance job orders as necessary.
  • Instructing new workers in rolling mill operation.

The fulfillment of duties involves regular communication with co-workers in the annealing and roll shop departments in order to make decisions concerning production and quality requirements
