Job description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Temporary Services is seeking a Bioinformatician I position Perform data management, quality control, data processing, data analysis and other bioinformatics-related tasks on high-dimensional data in coordination with study investigators and other computing and bioinformatics staff in the assigned department. Research focuses on the genetic foundations of urologic and renal diseases-including kidney stone formation, congenital urinary tract disorders, and male infertility-leveraging genomic and clinical data to identify disease mechanisms and improve patient outcomes.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Performs data and analysis-related tasks, including but not limited to, processing next-generation
sequence data (NGS) applications, manipulating common genomic file formats (e.g. FASTQ, SAM,
BAM) for NGS experiments, performing quality control for genome-wide association studies
(GWAS) or NGS studies, performing downstream analyses, and recommending, creating and
maintaining local bioinformatics databases, as well as making proper use of public databases. May
convert study data to and from common genetic (e.g. PLINK, VCF) file formats.
As part of the department and the bioinformatics team in particular, assists with the development of
grant applications, presentation of results and preparation of scientific papers for publication.
Participates in formal and informal training activities, monthly journal clubs and grant writing
meetings. Maintains knowledge of current changes and developments in the bioinformatics fields
through publications, communicating with subject matter experts, and attending related workshops
and conferences.
Identifies and resolves technical issues and proposes upgrades to current software. Evaluates and
identifies new technologies for implementation. Interfaces with high-performance computing staff as
needed.
Provides consultation services and training on bioinformatics-related concepts, applications and
tools.
Designs, develops and implements software workflow, pipelines and tools, and analytical
procedures supporting bioinformatics analysis. Participates in informatics projects providing
evaluation, design and building of databases, web applications and other services to support the
needs of investigators and departmental needs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary range is $52,555-$68,320
Shift: day shift 8-5 Mon-Fri
Length of assingment: 1 Year
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Biological Sciences, Computer Science or a related field. Work
experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
