  1. Job Summary

The Seasonal Grounds Crew Member supports the Facilities Department in maintaining the outdoor grounds and landscaping of the Luther Seminary campus. This position performs routine groundskeeping tasks, including mowing, trimming, landscaping maintenance, and seasonal cleanup to ensure the campus remains safe, attractive, and welcoming for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The role reports to the Facilities Manager and works as part of the campus facilities team to support the daily maintenance and stewardship of the seminary grounds.

The Seasonal Grounds Crew Member supports this mission by helping maintain a safe, welcoming, and well-cared-for campus environment that supports learning, community life, and hospitality for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  1. Essential Functions
  • Mow lawns and maintain turf areas across campus grounds.
  • Trim and edge around sidewalks, curbs, landscaping beds, trees, and buildings.
  • Remove weeds, leaves, branches, and debris from lawns, pathways, and outdoor common areas.
  • Assist with planting, mulching, watering, and maintaining flowers, shrubs, and landscaped areas.
  • Operate groundskeeping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other basic tools.
  • Assist with seasonal grounds tasks, including spring preparation, irrigation checks, and fall cleanup.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of sidewalks, outdoor gathering spaces, and campus grounds.
  • Report safety concerns, equipment issues, or maintenance needs to the Facilities Manager.
  • Follow established safety procedures and properly use equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support campus grounds operations.
  • All other duties as assigned

  1. Qualifications

Required
  • Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate basic groundskeeping and landscaping equipment.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining clean and well-kept outdoor spaces.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred
  • Prior experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or outdoor maintenance.
  • Basic familiarity with lawn care equipment and landscaping tools.

  1. Physical Demands

The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting while performing outdoor groundskeeping tasks. Employees must be able to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. The role involves extended periods of outdoor work and the operation of powered groundskeeping equipment.
  1. Work Environment

Work is performed primarily outdoors across the Luther Seminary campus. The position may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and cooler temperatures. The employee will regularly operate motorized equipment that produces noise and vibration and may encounter uneven terrain, landscaping materials, and other outdoor environmental conditions.
