Job description

Overview

The Renter's Insurance Claims Adjuster investigates, evaluates, and resolves first-party renter's claims (personal property, additional living expenses, loss of use, liability where applicable). • Identify potential subrogation and recovery opportunities; refer to subro as appropriate.

 Investigation & Evaluation

  • Conduct recorded statements, obtain proof of loss, and collect documentation (receipts, photos, inventories).
  • Order and assess reports (police, fire, vendor estimates); request SIU review on suspicious indicators.
  • Evaluate damages and ACV/RCT where applicable; calculate ALE/Additional Living Expense and Loss of Use.

 Negotiation & Settlement

  • Present clear coverage positions, negotiate fair settlements within authority, and issue payments timely.
  • Maintain accurate and supportable reserves; escalate above authority when warranted.

  • Document claim files contemporaneously with clear rationale and action plans.

  Catastrophe (CAT) Support

  • Participate in surge/CAT events (overtime/temporary reassignments as needed); maintain service levels during high-volume periods.

 Continuous Improvement

  • Identify fraud trends, process gaps, and training opportunities; contribute to playbook and template updates.
Qualifications

  • 2-5+ years of personal lines property claims adjusting experience (renter's/contents focus strongly preferred).
  • Working knowledge of policy interpretation, contents valuation, ALE/Loss of Use, and subrogation basics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to distill complex coverage into plain language.
  • Proficiency with claims systems (e.g., Guidewire/Sigma/ClaimCenter or similar), MS Office, and digital estimating tools.
  • Demonstrated compliance with state claims handling and documentation standards.
  • Licensing: Active adjuster licenses as required by domicile and any assigned states (e.g., TX, FL, LA). Ability to obtain additional licenses within 90 days of hire.

Preferred

  • Prior experience with renter's theft claims, smoke/soot damage, water mitigation, and content inventory reconciliation.
  • Exposure to SIU referrals and early fraud indicators (e.g., prior loss history, documentation anomalies).
  • Experience in CAT environments and surge workload management.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; industry coursework
