Description
The City of Redding is now accepting applications for the position for Power Plant Auxiliary Operator. Under supervision, this classification will assist in power plant operations, perform routine water/gas chemistry analysis, inspect and monitor operating components, and report plant status.
We are looking for someone to
- Monitor normal operations of power plant.
- Conduct water testing and treatment duties as defined by the Chemistry Manual.
- Assist in start-up and shut-down of power plant systems.
- Assist in power plant operations.
- Operate control panels for the steam and combustion turbine generators, including start-up and shut-down.
- Operate major auxiliary apparatus such as: air compressors; boiler feedwater treatment system; power plant cooling system; boiler feedwater and condensate system; and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment.
- Perform operating tests and inspections, make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as assigned.
- Immediately report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work to immediate supervisor and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions.
- Assist in maintenance efforts.
Qualifications we're looking for
- Knowledge of gas turbine and steam turbine power plant equipment and operating procedures
- Knowledge of emergency measures and safety requirements
- Knowledge of water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations and chemical handling requirements
- Ability to interact effectively with the public and employees
- Ability to operate steam and combustion turbine generators
- Ability to understand procedures and instructions
- Ability to perform duties in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, and as described in the Department's air, water, and hazardous material compliance programs, safety standards, and NERC
Education, Experience and Special Requirements:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent.
- Typical experience would include two years of experience as a power plant equipment operator in an operating power generating plant.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
- Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue.

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
- Positive past employment references
- Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check
- Passing of a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test
- Review of a driver history record (depending on position)
Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
