Job description

About Company:

Kundlas Consulting Group LLC is a professional consulting firm specializing in construction inspection and compliance services for public infrastructure projects. Our core services include on-site inspection of roadway, bridge, and utility construction to ensure adherence to engineering specifications, safety standards, and contract requirements. We support clients with daily reporting, materials testing coordination, schedule tracking, and quality assurance oversight. Additional services include project management, grants management for federally funded infrastructure and disaster recovery programs.

About the Role:

The Mechanical Engineer will support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) READI contract by designing HVAC and mechanical systems that support emergency operations, temporary facilities, infrastructure recovery, and resiliency projects. This role provides mechanical engineering expertise for the assessment, design, rehabilitation, and optimization of building mechanical systems impacted by disasters and emergency events.

The Mechanical Engineer will develop engineering solutions for heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, fuel systems, and other mechanical infrastructure necessary to support emergency response and recovery operations. The position requires collaboration with architects, electrical engineers, civil engineers, construction personnel, and government stakeholders to ensure safe, reliable, energy-efficient, and code-compliant mechanical system designs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with demonstrated experience in mechanical systems engineering.
  • Professional experience designing, evaluating, or rehabilitating HVAC and building mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar engineering design and drafting software.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, heat transfer principles, fluid flow, and thermodynamics.
  • Experience performing mechanical calculations, equipment sizing, and engineering analyses to support system design and optimization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and federal stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience supporting USACE, FEMA, DoD, GSA, VA, or other federal facility and infrastructure programs.
  • Experience designing HVAC systems for emergency facilities, temporary structures, healthcare facilities, or critical infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with building energy modeling, resiliency planning, and sustainable building practices.
  • Experience using advanced engineering analysis software such as ANSYS, Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE, or equivalent applications.
  • Experience supporting Design-Build projects and facility rehabilitation programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Design HVAC and mechanical systems supporting emergency operations, temporary facilities, infrastructure recovery, and reconstruction projects.
  • Conduct assessments of damaged or existing mechanical systems to determine repair, replacement, or upgrade requirements.
  • Prepare mechanical engineering calculations, equipment sizing analyses, technical specifications, drawings, and construction documentation in accordance with USACE standards and project requirements.
  • Evaluate heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing, fuel distribution, and mechanical utility systems to ensure operational reliability and code compliance.
  • Support the development of temporary facility mechanical systems required for emergency response and disaster recovery operations.
  • Coordinate with architects, electrical engineers, civil engineers, contractors, and project managers to develop integrated facility solutions.
  • Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and construction activities to verify compliance with approved mechanical designs and project specifications.
  • Conduct field inspections, facility assessments, and site investigations to support recovery planning and project implementation.
  • Support project scheduling, cost estimating, design reviews, and construction coordination activities.
  • Participate in emergency response support activities and post-disaster facility evaluations as required.

Skills:

The ideal candidate must possess strong mechanical engineering expertise in HVAC systems, building mechanical infrastructure, and facility support systems to develop reliable solutions for emergency response and recovery operations. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and related engineering software is essential for preparing mechanical designs, technical drawings, and construction documentation. A strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, equipment sizing, and mechanical system analysis is required to evaluate system performance and develop efficient design solutions. The candidate should demonstrate experience performing engineering calculations, equipment selection, system troubleshooting, and facility assessments for complex building systems. Knowledge of applicable building codes, energy standards, federal facility requirements, and mechanical engineering best practices is critical to ensuring safe and compliant project delivery. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills are necessary to support infrastructure recovery efforts under dynamic and time-sensitive conditions. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, regulatory agencies, and government stakeholders. Experience with resilient facility design, temporary facilities, and emergency operations support is highly desirable for successful performance under the USACE READI contract.
