What is a temporary AI data annotation job?

Temporary AI Data Annotation jobs involve labeling, categorizing, or tagging data such as images, text, audio, or video for the purpose of training artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning models. These roles are often short-term or contract positions, as they are needed for specific projects or during certain stages of data processing. Annotators play a critical role in ensuring the quality and accuracy of datasets, which directly impacts the performance of AI systems. No advanced technical skills are usually required, but attention to detail and consistency are important. These jobs may be offered remotely or on-site, depending on the employer.

What are some common challenges faced in a temporary AI data annotation role, and how can they be managed?

One of the main challenges in a Temporary AI Data Annotation position is maintaining consistent accuracy and attention to detail, especially when working with large volumes of data. Annotation guidelines can be complex and may change depending on project requirements, so adaptability and clear communication with the team are key. Managing repetitive tasks while ensuring high-quality work can be demanding, but using productivity tools and taking regular breaks can help maintain focus. Collaborating with quality assurance leads and participating in feedback sessions are also important for continuous improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary AI data annotation specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary AI Data Annotation Specialist, you need keen attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to follow complex guidelines, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with data labeling platforms, annotation tools like Labelbox or Prodigy, and basic computer literacy are typically required. Reliability, consistency, and the ability to work independently stand out as valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for producing high-quality, accurate data that directly impacts the effectiveness of machine learning models.

Video Data Annotation Team Lead

Salt Lake City, UT โ€ข On-site

Job description

About Obvio AI
Each year, more than 40,000 people in the U.S. leave home and never make it back due to traffic crashes. At Obvio, we believe these deaths are preventable. We deploy solar-powered, AI-assisted cameras to enforce traffic laws where pedestrians are most vulnerable-automating enforcement in ways that traditional systems cannot. Our approach has already led to a 50% reduction in reckless driving in early partner cities.
Founded by the team behind Motive's AI dashcam and backed by Bain Capital Ventures and Khosla Ventures, we are building the intelligence layer for safer streets globally.
As we open our new Salt Lake City office and grow our annotation team, we are looking for a Video Data Annotation Team Lead to help build and manage our newest team. This person will be deeply integrated into the day to day functions of the annotation team to understand exactly what the team is seeing, but experienced enough to coach others, identify problems, and keep the team operating at a high standard.
This is a player-coach role. You will still spend time reviewing video and working directly in our annotation workflows, but your bigger responsibility is making sure the people around you are successful. That means answering questions, reviewing difficult cases, catching quality issues before they become patterns, helping new hires ramp quickly, and making sure the team understands how to apply guidelines consistently.
What You'll Do
This role has two components: supporting the annotation team day-to-day while remaining hands-on in the work yourself.
Team Leadership and Quality
  • Serve as the day-to-day point person for a team of Video Data Annotators in our Salt Lake City office and work collaboratively with our California office
  • Help onboard and train new annotators, ensuring they understand our tools, workflows, quality standards, and escalation processes
  • Coach team members on accuracy, productivity, and consistency, giving clear and actionable feedback when performance needs to improve
  • Review difficult or ambiguous traffic events and help annotators determine the correct outcome
  • Conduct quality checks and identify recurring mistakes, inconsistencies, or areas where the team needs additional training
  • Run or participate in calibration sessions to make sure reviewers are applying guidelines consistently
  • Monitor team workload and queues, helping prioritize work and flagging capacity or performance issues before they become bottlenecks
  • Escalate recurring edge cases, unclear guidelines, and operational issues
  • Help maintain SOPs, training materials, and reviewer documentation as processes evolve

Video Review and Annotation
  • Review and annotate video footage to identify traffic events and potential violations
  • Accurately record and verify detailed information extracted from video content
  • Stay close to the annotation work to understand where reviewers are could be struggling and where workflows can improve
  • Model the level of accuracy, judgment, and productivity expected from the broader team
  • Provide feedback on annotation tooling and workflows based on what you and the team experience day-to-day
  • Partner with leadership to test and implement process improvements as the organization scales

What We're Looking For
  • 2-5 years of experience in data annotation, quality assurance, operations, trust & safety, content review, compliance operations, or another high-volume, detail-oriented environment
  • Prior leadership experience, whether as a team lead, senior individual contributor, trainer, QA specialist, or informal mentor
  • Exceptional attention to detail; you notice small inconsistencies that other people miss
  • Comfortable making judgment calls when a situation doesn't fit neatly into an existing rule
  • Able to give direct, constructive feedback without making the relationship adversarial
  • Comfortable holding teammates accountable to quality and productivity expectations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Quick to learn new tools and comfortable working in technology-driven workflows
  • You don't wait for someone else to notice a problem. If something is slowing the team down or creating errors, you surface it and help fix it
  • Experience with data labeling, AI/ML operations, video review, regulated workflows, or public safety is a plus
  • Startup experience is a plus; processes here will evolve quickly, and we want someone who is energized by helping make them better

Why Obvio
  • Your work will help save lives and improve road safety
  • Series A of $22M led by Bain Capital
  • Fast-moving startup environment with meaningful ownership
  • Competitive compensation and early-stage equity
