Job Description

The Pharmacy Technician performs a variety of technical and non-discretionary pharmacy functions under the direction and supervision of a pharmacist. Responsibilities include preparing medications, maintaining inventory, supporting IV compounding activities, and ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.


Key Responsibilities
  • Clean laminar flow hoods and countertops according to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Compound and admix intravenous (IV) solutions as directed by the pharmacist.
  • Count, measure, and prepare pharmaceuticals for prescriptions and medication orders.
  • Prepare and label medications accurately and safely for floor stock, drug carts, emergency supplies, and clinics.
  • Remove medications from inventory for prescription preparation.
  • Receive medication and supply orders and properly stock inventory.
  • Monitor inventory levels and remove expired or compromised medications.
  • Process expired medications and returns through appropriate vendors or reverse distributors.
  • Document quality assurance activities, including refrigerator temperature monitoring, late charges, and other required QA activities.
  • Maintain current competencies, licenses, certifications, and education requirements in accordance with Adventist Health, The Joint Commission, CMS, and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Refer all discretionary tasks and clinical decisions to the pharmacist.
  • Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA and other confidentiality requirements.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
  • Shift: Day Shift, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Schedule: 4×10-hour shifts
  • Days: Rotating Monday–Friday with occasional weekends, approximately once per month
  • California Pharmacy Technician License: Required
  • Recent hospital experience: Preferred
  • Inpatient pharmacy experience: Preferred
  • IV compounding experience: Preferred
  • Certificate of completion from a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program: Required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to interact with patients, staff, and healthcare professionals in a professional and courteous manner
Education & Certifications
  • Certificate of completion from a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program — Required
  • California Board of Pharmacy Technician Registration — Required
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to sit, communicate, hear, and walk on inclines and declines as required.
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus required.
  • Ability to occasionally lift boxes or supplies weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to demonstrate lifting a 25-lb. box from the floor.
  • Position has potential Category 2 exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Must use general office equipment, including computers, printers, calculators, and copy machines.

The Pharmacy Technician must maintain all required competencies, licenses, certifications, and education and comply with Adventist Health, The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), HIPAA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
