JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, Museum Aid provides general assistance to Museum patrons; performs a variety of non-technical tasks related to operations of the Museum; performs related work and research as required.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The following duties are possible for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.
  1. Staff the visitor desk; greet visitors and assist in their visit to the Museum by providing information, answering questions, and explaining the use of Museum facilities to patrons.
  2. As required, answer questions in person or by phone and provide information about the Museum, exhibits, Sutter County history, historical sites, and local events.
  3. Research information when requested. May utilize objects, photographs, and reference material from the Museum's collections to conduct research and prepare for review.
  4. May participate in presentations including the use of VCR, projector, and player piano to share information about local history.
  5. Monitor facilities and patrons to maintain the safety and security of exhibits, collections, and the Museum.
  6. May assist with the rental of Ettl Hall, a small facility connected to the Museum. Tasks can include responding to inquiries, conducting tours for potential renters, taking payments, and assisting with rental paperwork and processing.
  7. Be familiar with and sell items from Gift Shop; receive money, return change, and manage register transactions on a computer or tablet system.
  8. Open and close Museum, including securing the building and use of security system.
  9. After experience accrues, may provide instruction to and supervise volunteers.
  10. Answer phone and handle calls; take messages or direct calls, as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Familiarity with museum operations; local history and historical sites; research materials; the fundamental purpose and routine procedures of modern public museums; principles and practices of good public relations and customer service; basic math.
Ability to: Learn standard museum principles, policies and procedures, techniques and services; perform basic historical research; make observations and draw appropriate conclusions regarding the safety and security of the museum; interact effectively with museum patrons, employees and the general public; utilize correct verbal English skills; make decisions in accordance with established policies; work weekends as scheduled.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience working or volunteering in a museum is desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to maintain mental capacity of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances; the ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work involving standing and moving from one area of the office to another; the ability to see; ability to hear and communicate orally; sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements such as use of security key pad, calculator, telephone or other office equipment or supplies.
