Position Summary Information

General Description of Position - Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Dean or Program Chair, the Adjunct Instructor is responsible for instructing students in various courses in a classroom, laboratory, online, distance learning, and/or hybrid setting. Possible teaching assignments are based on experience and qualifications. This is a part-time temporary position.

Essential Functions

Provide Instruction in Assigned Subject Areas

Provide instruction to students in the face-to-face classroom, online, hybrid, and/or dual-credit setting according to the objectives of each course assigned. The instructor will utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom/laboratory/online that include, but are not limited to, lecture, small groups, engaged learning techniques, demonstrations, and student laboratory experiments.

Provide For Student Evaluation and Record Keeping

Prepare and administer evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.

Remain Current in Events and Developments Related to Subject Areas

Increase and improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through supplemental sources such as in-service activities, conferences, workshops, technical updates, and personal self-study.

Perform Other Functions Related to Teaching Assignments

Provide a safe laboratory work environment that includes the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Provide information and data that will assist in the preparation of supply and equipment order, course schedules, book orders, assessment of student learning, and other necessary reports. Prepare laboratory materials and set up lab equipment appropriate to areas of instruction. Maintain and store equipment when not in use.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Current knowledge of and experience in courses to be taught.

2. Be able to relate to colleagues, staff, students, and supervisors in a positive and cooperative manner.

3. Be able to apply and demonstrate effective communication skills.

4. Ability to develop and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and engaged learning techniques in the classroom.

5. Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom use.

6. Ability to update curricula to keep pace with developments in science and technology.

7. Ability to provide appropriate laboratory experiences for students in a safe working environment.

8. The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree with at least 18 hours of graduate credit in Physics or Engineering. Teaching experience equivalent to 18 semester hours or 6 academic courses/sections at secondary or post-secondary level that applies directly to area(s) of instructional responsibility.

Desired Qualifications

Familiarity with Engaged Learning practices.
