What is a temp lawyer?

A temp lawyer, also known as a temporary or contract lawyer, is a legal professional hired for a specific period or project rather than as a permanent staff member. Temp lawyers often handle tasks such as document review, research, or assisting during high workload periods. Law firms and legal departments use temp lawyers to manage increased caseloads, cover employee absences, or provide specialized expertise. This role offers flexibility for both employers and lawyers, making it a common option in the legal industry.

What types of assignments are typically given to temp lawyers, and how do these projects contribute to their professional development?

Temp lawyers are often assigned to handle document review, legal research, contract drafting, due diligence, and supporting litigation teams during peak workloads or special projects. These assignments offer exposure to various areas of law and the inner workings of different legal teams, which can broaden a temp lawyer’s expertise and build a diverse skill set. Regular collaboration with senior attorneys and exposure to a range of clients also provide valuable networking opportunities and insights into potential areas for future specialization or permanent roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp lawyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Lawyer, you need a law degree, active bar admission, and solid legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), e-discovery platforms, and document management systems is often required. Excellent time management, adaptability, and strong communication skills help temp lawyers quickly integrate into new teams and handle diverse legal tasks. These skills ensure high-quality legal work, efficient project completion, and seamless collaboration in fast-paced or transitional environments.

Temp Lawyers and Contract Lawyers both hold law degrees and bar admissions, working in similar environments like law firms and corporate legal departments. Both roles are essential for flexible legal staffing, but their employment arrangements and focus differ slightly.
