Position Summary
This position is targeted to meet the specific operational needs of the College.
This position will serve as a temporary part-time employee to support the needs of the institution, and assigned to the Pines Opportunity Center (Morgan County Campus), but may report to other locations as needed. This position will be responsible for conducting unarmed foot and vehicular patrols, and shall conduct regular interior and exterior rounds to ensure all locks and means of access are secured. The incumbent must be customer service oriented, thus communicating effectively with the public and staff is required. If hired for this position, one must be capable of preparing legible incident reports, clearly and concisely documenting all unusual or suspicious activities occurring on campus during their assigned shift. This position is also responsible for reporting crimes or suspicious persons to local law enforcement authorities.
This is a Temporary Part-time position as designated by the state of WV. A Temporary Employee is an employee hired into a position expected to last fewer than nine months of a twelve-month period. A Temporary Employee is not eligible for benefits.
The days and shift times during which the incumbent may be expected to work varies. There are special shifts at various times that may be required based upon business needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs interior and exterior patrols; vehicular patrols of campus parking lots, and its environs.
  • Unlocking and locking doors; setting intrusion detection alarms.
  • Respond to calls for security assistance in regard medical emergencies, and other first responder related matters.
  • Monitoring CCTV surveillance cameras and responding to observed suspicious activity
  • Investigate all suspicious and extraordinary situations.
  • Monitors access control, and ensures all visitors and vendors are signed-in.
  • Preparing comprehensive and descriptive incident reports.
  • Provides customer service to visitors, staff and students, e.g. answering questions pertaining to campus functions.
  • Prepares student and employee IDs, and issuance of vehicle parking permits (Main Campus).
  • Upon request, provides safety escort services to and from campus to parking lots.
  • Annotates the Daily Security Log Book, including routine patrols, as well as out of the ordinary situations.
  • Opens and secures College facilities based on the College's operating schedule and assists in situational lock downs.
  • Assists in the conducting of fire and other first responder drills.
  • Provides parking lot and traffic assistance based upon need or assignment.
  • When directed, performs daily mail pick-up and delivery when assigned to the Tech Center.
  • In the absence of the primary Receiver, acts as that employee's back-up. In this capacity is certified by the college to receive all packages destined for Tech Center recipients.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, or as directed.

Individuals hired for this position will be expected to deescalate potential confrontations. This is an unarmed position; however, incumbent will be trained and certified to carry and deploy pepper spray in self-defense.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • High School Diploma/GED

Experience:
  • One year of security, law enforcement, emergency medical service, or other related experience is preferred, or similar duties while serving in the armed forces of the United States.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • Ability to maintain a high level of situational awareness.

  • Capable of de-escalating confrontations.
  • Ability to multi-task and communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to walk, sit, climb stairs, and lift packages of moderate weight.
  • Sufficiently good hearing, eyesight, and depth perception to perform the functions of the position.
  • Experience and/or training in CPR, AED, basic first aid, and the carriage and deployment of pepper spray- preferred.
  • Must possess valid State's driver's license.

Licensure/Certification Required
  • A valid state driver's license is required in order to operate security vehicles.
  • CPR/AED Certification preferred.
  • Training in the use and deployment of OC Spray preferred.

Physical/Work Demands:
Incumbents will be required to possess the capacity to successfully perform certain physical activities, and possess sufficient use of one's extremities to walk during patrols; standing for long periods while assigned to a fixed post; climbing stairs, and entering restrictive spaces; visual acuity that permits the incumbent to observe and accurately identify individuals and vehicles on CCTV surveillance cameras, and to complete incident reports. The incumbent shall possess sufficiently good hearing and speech so as to engage in a coherent communicative exchange. The incumbent shall possess the emotional stability that fosters the ability to effectively deal with highly stressful situations and the capability to de-escalate such situations.
