What is a telephone operator?

Telephone operators are professionals who assist customers by connecting telephone calls, providing directory information, and offering other communication-related services. Traditionally, they manually connected calls by plugging wires into switchboards, but today, their role often involves handling customer service inquiries, assisting with international calls, and helping with billing or technical issues. Operators may work for telecommunications companies, emergency services, or businesses that require a live operator for their phone systems. Their work requires strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to quickly resolve issues over the phone.
