Job description

Purpose:

The Pharmacy Intern is responsible for preparing medications for patient use under the general supervision of a licensed pharmacist, in accordance with federal and state laws, and Vanscoy Rare Pharmacy (VRP) policies. This position reports to the Manager of Pharmacy Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with medical providers’ offices for order clarification and coordination of care to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes
  • Communicate with patients regarding prescribed therapies to promote patient outcomes
  • Participates in building and maintaining respectful, collaborative team relationships, exercising and encouraging positivity
  • Assist pharmacist(s) and pharmacy technicians with pharmacy fulfillment activities
  • Dispense medications and process orders, including accurately and efficiently filling prescription orders by retrieving medications, counting quantities, selecting lots, labeling, and packaging products appropriately, utilizing prescription information systems to enter and process prescription orders, and reviewing prescription information to confirm completeness and accuracy
  • Support inventory management, including receiving drug orders, checking in and restocking medications, and assisting with regular cycle counts
  • Assist with development and maintenance of pharmacy work instructions and clinical materials
  • Identify areas of improvement and assists with solution development/implementation
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all relevant privacy regulations
  • Adhere to established safety and quality assurance protocols related to medication storage and handling
  • Support pharmacy rotation students through guidance on assigned projects and tasks as well as provides training on various daily tasks such as conducting drug utilization reviews
  • Provide reliable staffing support according to an assigned schedule as dictated by the Manager, Pharmacy Operations
  • Complete additional projects and activities as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an ACPE accredited Doctorate of Pharmacy program
  • Good standing in an accredited School of Pharmacy
  • Minimum course equivalency of first professional year of college of pharmacy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience as a pharmacy technician or intern
  • Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology, medications, and dosage forms
  • Proficiency with using pharmacy management software
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team framework with pharmacists and other medical professionals
  • Knowledge of pharmacy rules and regulations including HIPAA compliance

Work Environment


VRP offers a hybrid work structure, combining remote work and in-office requirements. The frequency of onsite requirements will vary depending on role, operational needs, meetings, client visits, or team collaboration activities. Employees must be within commuting distance to Pittsburgh, PA, and able to report to the office when needed. We will provide advance notice when possible. This role routinely involves standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. When telecommuting, employees must have reliable internet access to utilize required systems and software required for the position's responsibilities. The amount of time the employee is expected to work per day or pay period will not change while working from home. Employees are responsible for the set-up of their home office environment, including physical set-up, internet connection, phone line, electricity, lighting, comfortable temperature, furniture, etc. Employee’s teleworking space should be separate and distinct from their “home space” and allow for privacy.

Physical Demands


Individual must be able to stand for extended periods of time; lift up to 20 pounds; and utilize the computer and bar code scanner. Must be able to use proper personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, gloves, eye protection and face masks when needed.
