Job description

The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC)seeksa full-time, mission-driven Government Affairs Manager to support our government affairs program. This position will play a critical role in the work of both the OEC and the Ohio Environmental Council'saffiliated 501(c)(4) organization, theOhio Environmental Council Action Fund, by ensuring internal alignment, strategic growth, and increased impact in our government affairs and democracy initiatives. The Government Affairs Manager will also collaborate closely with the Development, Communications, and Policy teams, work alongside the Political Affairs Manager, and report to the Vice President of Government Affairs.


Job Responsibilities


As the Government Affairs Manager, your responsibilitieswill include:

  • Supporting coordination and execution of cross-departmental government affairs projects, including the lobbying efforts of the OEC Action Fund; lead execution on some campaigns as assigned,
  • Drafting testimony, legislative analysis, policy recommendations, and advocacy materials.
  • Collaborating with Development and Communications teams to design and implement civic engagement training and member mobilization strategies.
  • Developing engagement opportunities tied to government affairs priorities.
  • Supporting member education and activation around key policy issues.
  • Representingthe organization in legislative and partner forums asrequired.
  • Managing the scheduling, meeting preparation, and follow-up for the government affairs team.
  • Drafting briefs, summaries, and communications to support strategic planning.
  • Managing the OEC Action Fund Statehouse Scorecard and legislator votes.
  • Supporting internal communication and tracking of government affairs activities across departments.
  • Leading the content development forgrantsmanagement, as needed.
  • Supporting the lobbying days and fly-in efforts as assigned.
  • Collaborating with policy teams and VP of Government Affairs to develop and support execution of broad government affairs strategies and tactics.


Key qualifications

Required:

  • You have at least 3+ years of experience in government affairs, advocacy, public policy, or a related field
  • You havedemonstrableexperience with legislative analysis, policy development, and coalition engagement.
  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft testimony, policy briefs, and advocacy materials.
  • You have effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple projects independently.
  • You have excellent organizational and project management skills, both individually and for a team, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • You have the ability to work collaboratively (across teams) or independently and "fill in the blanks" when needed.
  • You have the ability to work effectively with legislators from any political party infurtheranceof our mission.
  • You are comfortable with facilitating meetings and problem solving with a variety of stakeholders.
  • You approach your work with a flexible, positive attitude, and the spirit of "yes".
  • You have the ability to adapt quickly to change.
  • You share our commitment to ensuring an inclusive organization that is representative of all Ohioans.

Preferred qualifications:

  • You have administrative experience working with nonprofit and government organizations or advocacy groups.
  • You havedemonstratedacommitment to continued professional growth and development.
  • You have experience managingmultiple projects at once while delivering quality results.
  • You have experiencesupporting grant content development and reporting.
  • You have the ability to plan, track, and manage a budget successfully.
  • You have a demonstrable understanding of Ohio's state and local government landscape, especially experience in the Ohio Senate and Ohio House.
  • You have experience executing civic engagement, voter education, or democracy-focused initiatives, with efficacy.
  • You can travel within the state, and available for occasional overnight or out-of-state travel for meetings and conferences.

Compensation and benefits

The salary range for this position is $54,000 - $61,000 and is within the bargaining unit represented by OEC Workers United.Excellent benefits include employer-paid health, vision, dental, and life insurance; flexible and dependent care spending account; generous paid time off; paid parental leave; and employer-matched retirement fund.

Additional Details

The OEC's headquarters is in Columbus. The location of the Government Affairs Manager is flexible within the State of Ohio, with a preference for Columbus. Some travel will also berequired, including occasional overnight or out-of-state travel for conferences and meetings with partners, donors, etc.
