UNIT DESCRIPTION
The Tactical Communications Unit coordinates policy, spectrum, funding, and reporting in support of DOJ tactical wireless communications by collecting and evaluating component agency requirements. TCU provides secure, tactical, interoperable wireless communications in support of FBI and DOJ national security and law enforcement operations.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a current, permanent FBI employee
  • Must be able to obtain an SCI clearance
  • Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid driver's license
  • Some travel may be required

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Plan and manage the design, development, and delivery of the telecommunications equipment and services that support the broad mission requirements of the Bureau. Responsible for spectrum management coordination for FBI and DOJ components.
  • Supervise a staff of Electronics Technicians (ETs) to accomplish the telecommunications and networked systems.
  • Plan and manage the development, delivery, and support of radio subscriber units and specialized communications systems and devices, and provides support to a broad range of FBI operations to include crisis management and special events.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal FBI field telecommunication managers and external wireless industry partners in support of FBI operations.
  • Direct technical staff consisting of government and contract personnel.

Specialized Experience (SE)
GS-14: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-13 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
  • Experience preparing, reviewing and monitoring program procedures to include analyzing large amounts of data gathered from a variety of sources, and other FBI databases.
  • Experience using a variety of tools and methods to conduct cost estimates, analyze alternate solutions and present findings to management.
  • Experience interpreting and translating radio and spectrum policy into program procedures, ensuring compliance.
  • Experience with conventional and trunked radio systems.
  • Experience with radio spectrum and authorized usage.

  • Limited Movement: Policy has been implemented wherein support employees entering a position may be precluded from moving to another position within the Bureau through reassignment or change to a lower grade for a minimum of 12 months.
