Job description

Position Summary
The Telecom Designer is responsible for the layout, design, and production of CAD drawings for wireless telecommunications infrastructure projects. This role requires applied knowledge of telecom site layouts, equipment configurations, antenna systems, and utility coordination for new builds, collocations, modifications, and small-cell deployments. The Designer will be able to perform field site audits, work closely with engineers and project managers, to evaluate technical requirements and create clear, accurate, and constructible design documents that meet carrier standards, engineering best practices, and project schedules.
Essential Functions
  • Develop complete telecom site designs using AutoCAD, including site plan, compound layouts, grading plans, equipment placement, antenna layouts, cable routing plans, site details, utility routing plans, and site elevations.
  • Prepare Lease Exhibits, Zoning Drawing, and Construction Drawings in accordance with company standards that meet client requirements.
  • Design and layout new tower site builds, collocation projects, site modification projects, small-cell installation projects, including group based, rooftop, water tank, and pole mounted facilities.

  • Apply working knowledge of telecom equipment, including antennas, RRHs antenna and equipment mountain systems, cabling, ice bridges, equipment cabinets, generators, and foundations.
  • Understand and incorporate antenna layout best practices, including antenna parameters, azimuths, antenna sectors, mounting heights and orientations.
  • Route coax, hybrid, and fiber cabling, including vertical runs, horizontal routing and grounding considerations.
  • Coordinate site layouts with civil, structural, and electrical design elements, ensuring constructability and clash avoidance.
  • Assist with utility coordination by identifying power and/or fiber provider requirements and reflecting them accurately in design documents.
  • Able to interpret RF into RF documentation provided by the client or carrier.
  • Review redlines and engineering direction to incorporate revisions accurately and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, to resolve design issues and clarify constructability concerns.
  • Perform quality control reviews of drawings for accuracy, completeness, and consistency prior to submission.
  • Maintain organized project files and drawing sets in accordance with company CAD standards and procedures.
  • Participate in internal and client coordination meetings as required.
  • Willingness to keep up to date with CAD software, and training to improve CAD efficiency and accuracy.
  • May be assigned specific responsibilities within the company, as needed.
  • Work effectively both independently and as a team member.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures as stated in the current PJF Employee Policy and Procedure Manual.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of telecommunications site design principles and best practices including site layouts and antenna layouts.
  • Working knowledge of wireless infrastructure, including towers (monopole, self-supporting, guyed, water tank) rooftops, small-cells, DAS/ODAS systems, and small-cell facilities.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Possess mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Exceptional knowledge in Microsoft Office, Internet browsers, and email.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Ability to be a team player.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma required.
  • Associate degree in computer aided drafting, engineering technology, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in the A amp;E telecom industry.
