What is a telecom audit?

A telecom audit is a systematic review of an organization's telecommunications expenses, contracts, and services to identify billing errors, overcharges, and opportunities for cost savings. Auditors analyze invoices, usage patterns, and contracts from telecom providers to ensure accuracy and compliance. The goal is to optimize telecom spending, recover any overpayments, and improve efficiency within the organization's communication systems.

What are some common challenges faced in a telecom audit role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Telecom Audit often encounter challenges such as identifying billing discrepancies across multiple carriers, interpreting complex telecom contracts, and keeping up with evolving technologies and services. Effective auditors address these challenges by developing strong analytical skills, staying updated on industry changes, and employing specialized audit tools to streamline data analysis. Regular collaboration with IT, finance, and procurement teams also helps ensure accurate data gathering and a comprehensive audit process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a telecom auditor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Telecom Auditor, you need a solid understanding of telecommunications systems, billing processes, and financial analysis, often supported by a degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with telecom expense management (TEM) software, spreadsheets, and auditing tools is typically required, and certifications like Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) can be advantageous. Exceptional attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help auditors identify discrepancies and convey findings to stakeholders. These capabilities are crucial for uncovering cost-saving opportunities, ensuring regulatory compliance, and optimizing telecom expenditures.

Job description

Description
Middleburg is a vertically integrated real estate investment, development, construction, and management company creating high-quality rental communities in the highest-growth markets in the United States. We support 250+ employees across three corporate offices, roughly 20 apartment communities, and active construction sites.
The Technology Operations Administrator owns the day-to-day execution of technology operations for our people and our locations - devices, hardware, connected technology, asset records, and vendor coordination. If an employee needs working equipment on day one, if a leasing office needs its technology documented and functioning, or if a new community needs technology in place, this role makes it happen.
This is a hands-on execution role. The Chief Technology Officer sets technical direction, standards, and platform decisions, and will be directly involved in coaching you and developing your technical range. You own carrying those standards out consistently and improving the processes around them. You will also partner with our accounting group on asset records, purchase requests, and allocating technology and telecom costs across business units and properties. An outside support partner (a managed services provider) handles first-line ticketing and support, and you will be our day-to-day coordinator with them.
We are looking for someone with solid technical fundamentals who shows up ready to work and learn, takes personal ownership of outcomes, and is genuinely bothered by processes that are messier than they need to be. Just as important, we are looking for someone people are glad to see walk through the door. Much of this job happens face to face - at a leasing office, on a job site, at someone's desk - often with a person who is frustrated and behind on their day. Patience, a friendly manner, and the ability to explain things without making anyone feel foolish matter as much here as technical skill.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Devices and Endpoints (the core of this role)
  • Own the lifecycle of company-issued technology: configuration, deployment, maintenance, repair, refresh, and retirement
  • Perform hands-on hardware work - upgrades, component replacement, imaging, peripheral and workstation setup
  • Administer user accounts, group membership, and access within defined boundaries and approval processes
  • Work with our support partner to keep devices current on patching, updates, and security agent compliance
  • Maintain conference room, presentation, and shared-office technology in reliable working order

Operations and Administration
  • Onboarding and offboarding - Partner with People & Culture and hiring managers so every new team member has working equipment, accounts, and access on day one, and execute transfers and departures completely and on schedule: device recovery, account deactivation, access removal, no gaps
  • Team Member support - Be a responsive, patient, and genuinely helpful resource for technology questions from every location; provide attentive support for leadership, firm meetings, and events; build simple, usable how-to and onboarding materials
  • Asset records - Maintain a trustworthy inventory of all technology assets - who has what, where it is, and where it sits in its lifecycle - including tagging, periodic physical audits, and reporting (we have a platform in place that you will be trained on)
  • Procurement - Prepare purchase requests, quotes, and orders for approval; coordinate delivery, warranty claims, and returns
  • Cellular and connected devices - Administer service plans and connected device programs: activations, transfers, renewals, plan changes, and usage review
  • Spend and allocation - Track licensing counts, subscriptions, and renewal dates; support monthly allocation of technology and telecom costs across business units and properties; reconcile invoices against records; surface savings such as unused licenses, redundant services, and plan optimization
  • Vendor coordination - Serve as day-to-day coordinator with our support partner and with hardware, carrier, and service vendors; drive tickets and escalations to closure and hold partners to their response commitments
  • Documentation - Maintain runbooks, checklists, configuration records, and standard procedures so the work is repeatable and does not live in one person's head
  • Audit and compliance support - Partner with the CTO on insurance questionnaires, investor and lender diligence, and periodic access reviews, primarily by gathering accurate records and evidence
  • Continuous improvement - Identify recurring problems and repetitive manual work, and propose better ways to handle them

Sites and Field Support (approximately 30% travel)
  • Travel to offices, apartment communities, and construction sites to deploy, support, and document technology in place
  • Be the friendly, familiar face of technology at our sites - build real relationships with community and construction teams who do not see IT in person often, and leave every visit with people feeling better supported than before you arrived
  • Build and maintain a site-level record of technology at every location: office equipment, network and wireless hardware, connectivity and carrier details, phone systems, access control and badging, cameras, package and kiosk technology, and shared devices
  • Support new community openings, office expansions, and location technology projects
  • Perform routine administration and monitoring of site network equipment and connectivity under the CTO's standards; troubleshoot site-level issues and escalate design and architecture matters
  • Verify that backup, remote access, and continuity processes are actually working, not just configured
  • Provide hands-on support and informal training to site teams, and drive consistency of standards across locations

Requirements
Knowledge and Experience:
Required
  • 5-7 years in IT support, desktop or endpoint support, technology operations, or a similar hands-on technical role
  • Hands-on competence with business computers, mobile devices, and common workplace technology, including hardware troubleshooting, upgrades, and imaging
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals - addressing, DNS, DHCP, wireless - and the ability to troubleshoot connectivity at a site level
  • Practical understanding of security hygiene: access control, multi-factor authentication, patching, least privilege, and phishing awareness
  • Experience maintaining equipment inventory or asset records, and comfort working within defined access boundaries, change approval, and documentation requirements
  • Strong organization and follow-through - you close loops without being reminded
  • A good manner with people: patient, approachable, and calm under pressure, with the ability to explain technology clearly to colleagues at every level of comfort and seniority, and to stay gracious when someone is stressed or the timing is bad
  • Genuine willingness to be coached, to learn our way of doing things, and to grow into greater responsibility
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel approximately 30%
  • Ability to lift and move computer and network equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Preferred
  • Experience supporting both Windows and Apple devices
  • Exposure to endpoint or mobile device management, asset management, or ticketing and IT service management practices
  • Foundational certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+
  • Experience supporting geographically distributed locations and working alongside an outsourced IT provider
  • Familiarity with cellular services, connected devices, access control, cameras, or phone systems
  • Exposure to real estate, property management, construction, development, hospitality, or other multi-site operating businesses
