What is a teen lifeguard?

Teen Lifeguards are young individuals, typically between the ages of 15 and 18, who are trained and certified to supervise swimming areas and ensure the safety of patrons. Their main responsibilities include monitoring swimmers, enforcing pool rules, performing rescues, and providing first aid or CPR if needed. These positions often serve as a valuable first job, helping teens develop responsibility, teamwork, and leadership skills, while also promoting water safety within the community.

What does a teen lifeguard do?

Teen lifeguards monitor the behavior of the attendants of a pool to ensure their safety. Your most important responsibility is to watch the swimming activity and rescue anyone who may slip underwater unintentionally and prevent them from drowning. You also enforce rules of the pool, which may include no running, no pushing others into the pool, and a limit on the number of people in the spa. Other job duties may include cleaning the pool of debris, manning the entrance desk, and locking up the pool gates. Teen lifeguard jobs are most common at public pools during the summer, but teens can work as lifeguards year-round at indoor pools and private pools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a teen lifeguard, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Teen Lifeguard, you need strong swimming skills, knowledge of water safety, and current lifeguard certification, typically including CPR and first aid. Familiarity with rescue equipment like flotation devices, whistles, and emergency communication systems is essential. Quick decision-making, vigilance, and effective communication help teen lifeguards stand out in this role. These competencies are critical for ensuring swimmer safety, preventing accidents, and responding effectively to emergencies.

What are some common challenges teen lifeguards face during their shifts, and how can they effectively handle them?

Teen lifeguards often encounter challenges such as maintaining focus during long, sometimes uneventful shifts, balancing authority with peers, and responding quickly to emergencies. To effectively handle these challenges, it's important to stay attentive by regularly scanning the pool, taking scheduled breaks, and participating in ongoing training. Building confidence through practice and clear communication with supervisors and fellow lifeguards also helps ensure a safe and supportive work environment.

Both roles promote water safety awareness among youth and are essential in aquatic safety programs.

Is teen lifeguarding a good teen job?
