JOB SUMMARY

The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician' performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.

Experience: Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure: Current Surgical Tech Certification required, or if employed prior to July 1, 2021, registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine required.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Ability to create and maintain a sterile field. Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Basic understanding of medical terminology. Computer skills.

  • Communication: Collaborates with the leadership team and UCIC to identify and resolve unit issues.
    • Keeps co-workers and intra-op staff informed of any updates/issues.
    • Follows written instructions as needed.
  • Technical Competency: : Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served.
    • Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application.
    • Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical Demand Code: Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment. The base compensation range for this role is  $27.83  - $46.09 hourly.

Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.  Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
