As an educational technology director, your duties are to determine the technology needs of students and teachers and develop partnerships with vendors to secure classroom technology within your budget. You also oversee other technical administrators and workers during the daily operations of the technology department. At a company, a corporate technology director has similar responsibilities but is not focused on educational technology, but rather on infrastructure and applications that enhance business productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technology Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technology Director, you need strong leadership abilities, deep technical expertise, and experience in IT strategy, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set successful Technology Directors apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for aligning technology initiatives with organizational goals and ensuring secure, efficient technology operations.

How does a Technology Director typically collaborate with other departments to drive organizational goals?

A Technology Director plays a crucial role in aligning the IT strategy with the broader objectives of the organization. This involves regular collaboration with leaders from departments such as operations, finance, marketing, and human resources to understand their technological needs and ensure IT initiatives support their goals. Technology Directors often participate in cross-functional meetings, manage interdepartmental projects, and communicate technical concepts in accessible terms. Effective collaboration helps streamline workflows, support digital transformation, and maximize the impact of technology investments.

Job description

TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR:
Aldridge is seeking a business technology solutions leader to serve as a senior, client facing advisor who helps organizations align technology decisions with business goals. This role operates at the intersection of business strategy, technology understanding, and client trust, and is designed for individuals who excel in executive level conversations rather than hands on implementation.
The primary purpose of this role is to lead business technology conversations with clients, understand their business objectives and current IT environments, and translate those inputs into clear roadmaps, recommendations, and actionable next steps. This role is frequently brought into client conversations by Outside Sales and Account Management when technology challenges require thoughtful solutioning, prioritization, or executive level explanation.
In addition, this role may act as the primary delivery resource for select paid consulting and recurring advisory engagements, such as IT audits, assessments, findings & recommendations work, and fractional CIO or fractional IT Director services.
Key Responsibilities:
Sales & Account Team Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Outside Sales and Account Management, joining client conversations where solution leadership and strategic context are required.
  • Support opportunity development by shaping solution direction and building confidence in Aldridge's recommended approach.
  • Help clients understand why change is needed and how Aldridge can help deliver it.
  • Represent Aldridge in person with professionalism and credibility, establishing trust and foundational understanding with client organizations.
Client Advisory & Business Alignment
  • Engage directly with business owners, executives, and senior leaders to understand organizational goals, constraints, risks, and growth initiatives.
  • Establish a clear understanding of clients' current IT environments at a conceptual and practical level, sufficient to guide strategic decision making.
  • Serve as a trusted business technology advisor, framing technology discussions in terms of outcomes, tradeoffs, risk, and value.
Technology Roadmapping & Recommendations
  • Develop technology roadmaps that align IT initiatives to client business objectives, sequencing improvements responsibly and realistically.
  • Collaborate with Professional Services and Managed Services teams to ensure recommendations are practical, supportable, and executable, even when this role is not responsible for implementation.
  • Produce client ready roadmap summaries and presentations for executive and leadership audiences.
  • Clearly articulate technology options, implications, and recommendations to executive and semi technical audiences.
  • Help clients move from uncertainty to decision readiness through structured conversations and clear guidance.
  • Define project scopes of work (SOWs) for approved initiatives, enabling confident client approval and transition to delivery teams.
Consulting & Advisory Engagement Delivery
  • Serve as the primary delivery owner for select paid consulting engagements, including:
  • IT audits and environment assessments
  • Risk, gap, and maturity evaluations
  • Findings & Recommendations reports
  • Deliver recurring advisory engagements, such as fractional CIO or fractional IT Director roles, providing ongoing strategic guidance to client leadership.
  • Plan, execute, and present consulting engagements with clear scope, structure, and executive ready outputs.
Required
  • 8-12+ years of experience in an MSP, IT consulting, or technology advisory environment serving SMB or mid market clients.
  • Demonstrated success in client facing, consultative roles involving executive level conversations.
  • Strong working knowledge of modern IT environments, including Microsoft 365, cloud platforms, identity, cybersecurity fundamentals, networking, and managed services models.
  • Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business language.
  • Experience creating client facing presentations, roadmaps, and scoped recommendations.
Preferred
  • Prior experience as a fractional CIO, principal consultant, solution consultant, or senior advisor.
  • Comfort working alongside sales teams in solutioning and opportunity development conversations.
  • Experience delivering paid assessments, audits, or advisory engagements.
Hybrid work schedule
  • Up to 40% travel will be required. Most travel will be short trip, either departing and returning on the same day or with one overnight stay.
  • On days without travel requirements, optional work from home days are Mondays and Fridays
  • On days without travel, required in-office days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
Additional Requirements
  • Physical ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods
  • Able to drive for local travel.
  • Able to fly on commercial airlines for regional and national travel.

Benefits:

  • Generous Employer Contribution to Health Benefits Package
  • 401(k) Matching
  • 4 Weeks Paid Time Off per year, plus additional days for community service
