Job description

Facilities Custodian - Part Time Town of Tillsonburg is looking for an enthusiastic Facilities Custodian who, based primarily at the Tillsonburg Community Centre, will be responsible for day-to-day facilities and grounds activities at Town facilities as assigned, including daily and seasonal housekeeping tasks, aiding in room set ups and tear downs, outside litter pick up, horticulture and other duties.  Works in facility during special events providing operational services and direct assistance to the public as required.
This is a permanent part-time position with an option to enroll in OMERS defined pension plan.

Reports to: Facilities  Supervisor
Hourly Rate: $26.28 - $30.73/hour
Weekly hours: up to 20 *no guarantee
Openings: 1 (existing)

Responsibilities
  • Perform daily and weekly facility, operational and housekeeping tasks including, cleaning equipment repairs, sweeping, mopping, burnishing, disinfecting, dusting, spot cleaning as required inside and outside specified Town facilities.
  • Set up and tear downs of activity areas for events.
  • Litter pick up as required
  • Assist in the training of new Custodial staff as required.
  • Liaise with the public and user groups to accommodate rentals and provide assistance as well as monitor functions to ensure workplace and provincial regulations are being followed.
  • Assist with summer shutdown work in facility as per the work plans.
  • Maintain log book to keep track of work completed and proper records kept.
  • Adheres to emergency and operating procedures and safety regulations by handling and storing chemicals safely, following an evacuation plan in the case of an emergency and performing first aid to the level of competency attained.
  • Carries out all duties and responsibilities using due diligence and complying with Ontario Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Following other procedures and directives as required.
  • Recommend cost effective solutions to operational issues.
  • Make recommendations to the Facilities Supervisor on procedural issues.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures for the Town.
  • Ensures operating procedures and workplace safety regulations are followed.
  • Position will require 40 hours per week, working to meet the needs of indoor and outdoor customers.
  • Ability to work in adverse climates and operate noisy equipment as required.
  • Occasionally required to perform work alone.
  • Working conditions are subject to change based on client’s needs, new techniques and changing technology.
  • Assist with horticultural work including planting, weeding, maintaining and watering of flowerbeds.
  • Provide facility maintenance, cleaning and housekeeping services at other Town buildings as assigned by the Facilities Supervisor and/or Manager of Parks & Facilities (i.e. – Cemetery Office & Museum).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Standard First Aid
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office.
  • ORFA Recreation Facility Cleaning, Disinfection and Sanitization Principles (or willing to obtain on hire).
  • Ability to solve problems and work as a team to develop solutions
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (Occupational Health and Safety Act).
  • Valid class “G” license and clean drivers abstract.
  • Good communication skills
  • Previous similar experience with facility housekeeping in an institutional setting.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
